Major C'tan Shard Overhaul Boosts Nightbringer Survivability and Mobility
On January 5, 2026, Necrons received a rules refresh that significantly buffs the C'tan Shards, most notably the new Shard of the Nightbringer. The Nightbringer gains a better armor save, more wounds, increased movement and Deep Strike, changes that will alter how players deploy and counter these monstrously powerful characters.

The Necrons faction pack update rolled out new rules for the named C'tan Shards that materially change their battlefield role. The Shard of the Nightbringer saw the most dramatic improvements: its basic armor save improves from 4+ to 3+, it gains four additional wounds for a total of 16, its Movement increases from 6" to 10", and it now has the ability to Deep Strike. Those changes make the Nightbringer both tougher and far more mobile than before.
The refresh is not limited to the Nightbringer. All four named C'tan Shards, Nightbringer, Deceiver, Void Dragon, and Transcendent C'tan, receive updates to movement, saves and wounds as part of the faction pack refresh, a coordinated effort timed with the new Nightbringer model’s pre-order window. The collective uplift signals a design intent to shift the Shards from slow, elite power pieces into more dynamic, resilient options that can shape games across multiple turns.
Practically, the Nightbringer’s movement bump and Deep Strike ability change how it approaches terrain and objectives. A 10" move helps it traverse and contest areas of the board that previously slowed it, while Deep Strike lets it bypass movement-blocking terrain and arrive directly into key positions or behind enemy lines. The improved 3+ save and higher wound pool markedly increase survivability against both massed small-arms fire and single high-damage attacks, meaning opponents will need dedicated means to remove it or accept its continued presence on the table.

For tournament and matched-play environments, expect lists that leverage the Nightbringer to be harder to dislodge and more flexible in objective-based scenarios. Update your opponent planning: allocate more anti-vehicle or high-strength firepower for priority targets, and reconsider unit placement to defend against sudden Deep Strikes. For players running Necrons, reassess list builds to exploit the Nightbringer’s new mobility and staying power, and consider pairing it with units that can make the most of its ability to reach contested positions quickly.
Verify your army lists against the new faction pack rules when they become fully available and adjust deployment and reserve strategies accordingly. The combination of higher resilience and improved tactical reach for the C'tan Shards is a clear nudge toward making them more central to Necron game plans, and the change will reverberate through local meta and tournament scene as players adapt.
