A 47-year-old San Francisco man was arrested after a fatal stabbing in the Mission District that left one person dead and has renewed concerns among residents and business owners about public safety. The San Francisco Police Department says the stabbing was reported at 12:11 a.m. and officers found a victim suffering from an apparent stab wound.

“The stabbing happened around 12:11 a.m. on the 1900 block of Mission Street, according to the San Francisco Police Department.” Lifesaving efforts were made at the scene, and the victim was transported to a hospital where they later died. The victim’s identity has not been released; one local outlet reported the victim as male.

Officers arrested Paulino Inxah, 47, of San Francisco, near the intersection of 15th and Mission streets after developing probable cause while the suspect remained on the same block, according to local reporting of police statements. Authorities seized a knife from Inxah’s person at the time of arrest. Inxah was booked into San Francisco County Jail on suspicion of murder and possession of narcotics paraphernalia.

Although an arrest has been made, local outlets and police characterize the case as ongoing. “Although an arrest has been made, this remains an open and active investigation. Anyone with information is asked to contact the SFPD at 415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the message with SFPD.” Tipsters may remain anonymous.

The incident occurred on a stretch of Mission Street between 15th and 16th streets that residents say has seen increased street-level disorder since a major enforcement sweep of Sixth Street and the Civic Center in early 2025. Local reporting notes the area has been the scene of multiple violent incidents in recent weeks, including a separate January attack on 16th Street that left three people stabbed, two critically. One outlet counted this as the city’s fourth homicide of the new year compared with one homicide at the same point last year.

Beyond immediate public-safety implications, such incidents affect the Mission District’s evening economy. Fewer evening customers can depress revenues for restaurants and bars, raise local security costs, and influence perceptions that shape commercial leasing and foot-traffic patterns. City policymakers face a balance between enforcement, outreach, and services for people with substance use and mental health needs; the block-level shifts after the 2025 sweep illustrate how enforcement actions in one neighborhood can displace activity to another.

Investigators have not released a motive and have not identified additional suspects. The SFPD and the District Attorney’s office will determine whether formal charges are filed and whether bail will be set at the initial appearance. For now, neighbors and merchants are left monitoring official updates and weighing short-term security measures while officials continue the active investigation.
