McCook Community College Women Defeat NJC 62-53 in Region IX Game
McCook Community College women beat NJC 62-53 in Sterling, keeping first place in Region IX South and reaching the midway point of the conference slate.

The McCook Community College Lady Indians held off Northeastern Junior College 62-53 in Sterling, Colo., preserving their hold on first place in the Region IX South and marking the halfway point of the 14-game conference schedule.
"The McCook Community College Lady Indians maintained their lead in the Region IX South standings Saturday with a 62-53 road win over Northeastern Junior College," the college's game report said. McCook built and protected a lead through the second half, relying on balanced scoring and defensive stops to contr, the truncated original summary noted.
McCook led by quarters of 15-10, 19-16, 15-11 and 13-16 for the final 62-53 margin. The Lady Indians shot 21-of-57 (36.8%) while Northeastern went 19-of-62 (30.6%). McCook out-rebounded Northeastern 43-38 and finished with 14 assists to Northeastern's 11. The box score lists turnovers at McCook 9 and Northeastern 13; the narrative also contains a conflicting line that "The Plainswomen turned the ball over six times."
The third quarter supplied the game's decisive momentum swings. McCook's lead reached 14 points with 6:30 left in the period before Northeastern reeled off a 10-0 run to cut the gap to 40-36 near the 4:00 mark. McCook closed the quarter on a 9-1 run to lead 49-37. In the fourth quarter McCook led 54-44 with 5:25 remaining, Northeastern trimmed the margin to 54-41 at 2:47, and the Lady Indians closed the game on a 7-2 run. Freshman forward Stephanie Nnabuihe of Newbridge, Ireland, "took charge in the paint with five points as part of her 11-point, 18 rebound game," the game account noted.
The win improved McCook to 6-1 in Region IX South play and 13-10 overall; Northeastern fell to 3-4 in the region and 7-16 overall. McCook returns home for two games next week: Wednesday versus Lamar at 5:30 p.m. in the Peter and Dolores Graff Events Center, followed by a Saturday matchup with Southeast Community College at 2 p.m. McCook seeks revenge against Lamar, the only Region IX South team to beat the Lady Indians so far after a 49-45 loss at Lamar on Jan. 21.
Beyond the box score, the result matters to Logan County as local college athletics contribute to community cohesion, youth engagement and physical activity opportunities. Strong performances by student-athletes like Nnabuihe provide visible role models for younger players and help sustain local support for women's sports programs that often operate with tighter budgets than larger institutions. Travel demands and resource gaps for rural programs remain an equity concern for administrators and families; home stands such as next week's doubleheader reduce travel strain and increase access for local residents to attend and support the team.
What comes next for McCook is both practical and symbolic: holding first place through the second half of conference play will test depth and injury management, and the upcoming home dates give Logan County a chance to rally around the Lady Indians as they push toward the Region IX finish.
