McIlroy Shares First-Round Lead at 2026 Masters, Chasing Back-to-Back Title
Rory McIlroy fired 5-under to share the Round 1 lead at the 2026 Masters, one win away from becoming the first back-to-back champion since Tiger Woods.

Rory McIlroy opened his title defense at Augusta National with a composed 5-under-par round, sharing the first-round clubhouse lead with Sam Burns and positioning himself as the player to beat in the 90th edition of the Masters Tournament.
The round was far from flawless early, but McIlroy recovered with five birdies across an eight-hole stretch to reach 5-under. He was candid afterward about the gap between his ball-striking and his scorecard. "I think a fair score for me today would have been like 2-under maybe with some of the places I hit it," McIlroy said. "But again, I used my head and got up-and-down when I needed to. I didn't compound mistakes. That's just a learning curve that you have to go through around here, and I did it well today."
The contrast with this time last year is striking. In Round 1 of the 2025 Masters, McIlroy stood seven shots behind leader Justin Rose before rallying across the weekend and defeating Rose on the first playoff hole with a three-foot putt. That victory completed the career Grand Slam, ending an 11-year major drought dating to his 2014 Open Championship win, and made McIlroy the sixth player in the modern era to win all four major titles, joining Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods. He remains the only European to accomplish the feat.
Should McIlroy claim the green jacket again this week, he would become the first player since Woods won consecutive Masters titles in 2001 and 2002 to repeat as champion.

Burns matched McIlroy's total with a round built around Augusta National's par-5 holes. The five-time PGA TOUR winner sank an 11-foot eagle putt on the par-5 second and added a birdie on the par-5 eighth, surging to the top of the leaderboard before McIlroy completed his own run.
McIlroy's playing partner for the day, Cameron Young, arrived at Augusta fresh off the biggest win of his career: the 2026 Players Championship. Pre-tournament favorite Scottie Scheffler, the world No. 1 and two-time Masters champion in 2022 and 2024, had a difficult day. Rose, who led after Round 1 in 2025 before falling to McIlroy in that playoff, carded a 70. Bryson DeChambeau, who has described his rivalry with McIlroy as good for golf, finished at 4-over par.
McIlroy's five major titles span the 2011 U.S. Open, the 2012 and 2014 PGA Championships, the 2014 Open Championship, and last year's Masters. After 18 holes at Augusta, he is already one round closer to a sixth.
