For the first time in the Michelin Guide's 21-year North American history, anonymous inspectors are dining across Cleveland, Detroit, Indianapolis, Milwaukee, Minneapolis, and Pittsburgh. The French rating guide announced Wednesday that it will publish a new MICHELIN Guide American Great Lakes Region in 2027, marking the first time any of the six cities has appeared in a Michelin publication.

Gwendal Poullennec, International Director of the Michelin Guide, confirmed at an April 8 press conference that full-time inspectors employed exclusively by Michelin are already working across all six markets. "We are excited to finally be putting a stake in the ground in the Great Lakes region, spotlighting the talent and food cultures across these six great cities," Poullennec said. The inaugural restaurant selections will be unveiled at a dedicated MICHELIN Guide American Great Lakes Ceremony in 2027, though no ceremony date has been set.

The guide will apply Michelin's three-tier star system: one star for "a very good restaurant," two for "excellent cooking, worth a detour," and three for "exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey." Restaurants can also earn Bib Gourmand designations for exceptional value, or receive "Selected" listings, which carry meaningful recognition without a star.

The expansion carries a real price tag for participating cities. Visit Milwaukee committed $450,000 total, paid at $150,000 annually over three years, to secure its inclusion. Minneapolis' Tourism Improvement District signed a $250,000-per-year, three-year partnership with Michelin. Regional reporting noted that bringing the guide to a new city often costs local tourism boards more than $1 million over a three-year deal. Peggy Williams-Smith, President and CEO of Visit Milwaukee, defended the outlay directly: "We know that will pay us back dividends because when people travel, when they travel for food, they stay overnight in hotels."

The economic case is concrete. A 2025 Ernst and Young study found starred venues saw average revenue increases of 32% after their first Michelin accolade. In Atlanta, restaurants Little Bear and Heirloom Market BBQ each reported 25 to 30% revenue jumps after receiving recognition. A Chicago study tied each additional Michelin-listed restaurant in a neighborhood to roughly a 0.5% rise, or about $1,141, in median home values.

Emily Laurer, Vice President of PR and Communications at Destination Cleveland, called the announcement validation of a culinary scene that had already earned national attention. "Today's announcement reflects the momentum we're seeing in Cleveland's culinary community," Laurer said. "Our chefs and restaurants have earned national attention, and we're excited to welcome Michelin inspectors to experience that firsthand."

Michelin launched its first North American guide in New York City in 2005, added Chicago in 2011, Washington D.C. in 2017, California statewide in 2019, and Florida in 2022. Boston and Philadelphia joined a Northeast Cities edition as recently as 2025. The multi-city regional format, first applied to the American South across six states, is now the template for the Great Lakes, reflecting a calculated shift away from standalone city guides. Michelin cited research showing 74% of travelers consider the guide's presence a significant factor when choosing a destination, the data point underpinning the tourism boards' willingness to spend.
