Middletown fire officials are warning business owners and property managers after 15 reported structure fires struck the city in early 2026, several of them at local businesses including Lester’s Rock N Roll Shop, Naskar Drive‑Thru and Brent’s Smokin’ Butts & Grill. The cluster prompted the fire marshal’s office to urge extra precautions around electrical systems and building maintenance.

The 15 structure fires occurred between Jan. 1 and Feb. 6, 2026, according to the Middletown fire marshals. By contrast, the same Jan. 1 to Feb. 6 period in 2025 produced 12 structure fires, and those 12 were all contained to residential properties. Officials characterized the change as a modest numerical increase but a notable shift in the types of buildings affected, with more commercial properties hit this year.

Middletown Fire Marshal Captain Frank Baughman and Middletown Fire Marshal Lt. David Kaiser outlined common risk factors that can lead to structure fires without tying any specific cause to the named business incidents. Baughman said, “space heaters, extension cords, outdated home maintenance and improperly extinguished smoking materials can lead to structure fires.” Lt. Kaiser added that “extension cords plugged into power strips can overload a home’s electrical system, increasing the risk of fire.”

Officials noted geographic patterns as well as seasonal drivers. A majority of the recent structure fires occurred west of Breiel Boulevard, an area officials say contains older homes that are harder to keep warm during cold months and that may have aging electrical systems or outdated wiring that contribute to electrical overload risk. Fire marshals also flagged a seasonal dynamic, saying cold weather can lead to a rise in electrical fires while summer months often bring fires tied to bonfires and outdoor grilling.

The Journal-News coverage named three commercial properties among those affected in early 2026 but did not include official cause determinations, damage estimates or casualty figures for the incidents. The reporting also did not list exact addresses beyond the Central Avenue location for Lester’s Rock N Roll Shop or provide completed investigative findings for each fire.

Middletown fire officials are reminding residents, business owners and property managers to take proactive steps to prevent fires — particularly those caused by electrical issues — and urged “maintenance” as a primary safeguard. Officials say attention to electrical systems and routine upkeep remain the priority as the city responds to the cluster of early‑2026 structure fires.
