Mt. Vernon closed the regular season with a 58-41 road win at Yorktown, finishing 22-3 overall and a perfect 7-0 in Hoosier Heritage Conference play.

Mt. Vernon (Fortville) beat host Yorktown 58-41 to close the regular season and complete an undefeated 7-0 Hoosier Heritage Conference slate, improving to 22-3 overall in a game that “showcased senior leadership and a physical defensive approach that limited Yorktown’s looks inside.” The game was played Friday, Feb. 27, 2026, at Yorktown.
Senior point guard and Purdue recruit Luke Ertel and 6’8” junior forward Max Vise combined for 40 points as the Marauders built control early, leading 15-6 after the opening quarter and 37-17 at halftime. Mt. Vernon extended that advantage to 49-26 entering the fourth quarter before closing the game 58-41.
Yorktown’s Class 3A No. 16 Tigers were paced by Mason Trammel, who led the team with 18 points. Yorktown entered the matchup on an eight-game winning streak but fell to 14-8 overall and 3-4 in conference play after the loss at home.
The victory kept Mt. Vernon’s momentum intact; the Marauders have won five straight and 15 of their last 16 games, with their lone setback during that stretch an 84-81 overtime loss at Pike on Feb. 10, a Pike squad ranked No. 4 overall and No. 3 in Class 4A. Mt. Vernon’s 22 wins are the most for the program since the 2021-22 team also finished 22-3.
Mt. Vernon carries national conference recognition into postseason play, listed No. 6 overall in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association poll and No. 4 in Class 4A. The Marauders had already clinched an outright Hoosier Heritage Conference title the previous week with a 61-46 victory over New Palestine, their first HHC crown since 2022, sealing the league by two full games over second-place Pendleton Heights (5-2).
Conference final standings show Mt. Vernon atop the HHC at 7-0, Pendleton Heights second at 5-2, Shelbyville and New Palestine tied for third at 4-3, Yorktown fourth at 3-4, Delta and Greenfield-Central both 2-5, and New Castle 1-6.
On the postseason calendar, Mt. Vernon drew a bye in the 4A Sectional 9 tournament to be hosted by Greenfield-Central and will be off until a Friday, March 6, 6 p.m. semifinal against the winner of the Muncie Central (11-11) vs. Richmond (6-18) game, which is scheduled for Tuesday at 6 p.m. With a top-10 IBCA ranking and an experienced senior in Ertel steering the offense alongside Vise’s inside presence, Mt. Vernon will enter Sectional 9 with the HHC title and defensive identity that carried them through a 58-41 road finish.
