Musk says SpaceX gave Anthropic only a six-month Colossus lease

Elon Musk said SpaceX gave Anthropic only a six-month lease on its Colossus AI training data center clusters, undercutting the idea that the arrangement was a long-term commitment and recasting one of the most watched AI infrastructure deals as a short-term test.

Musk said on X that the agreement was structured as a 180-day term followed by a mutual 90-day cancellation window, and that the short-term setup was SpaceX’s request, not Anthropic’s. He said the relationship could still last longer, but the wording signaled a far more tentative arrangement than a multiyear partnership. In a market where high-end compute has become as strategically important as capital, data and top engineering talent, that distinction is not cosmetic.

The original framing had presented the deal as a major compute partnership, with Anthropic getting access to Colossus 1 in Memphis, Tennessee and SpaceX infrastructure becoming part of the startup’s model-training supply. Anthropic announced the deal with SpaceX on May 7, 2026. Musk’s clarification suggests both companies may have wanted room to reassess price, capacity needs and strategic exposure before locking themselves into something longer.

That short horizon is the business signal. A six-month lease gives SpaceX a way to monetize a valuable data-center asset beyond launch and satellite work, while giving Anthropic a path to expand compute without committing to a provider for years. It also shows how tight AI infrastructure remains, with major players still treating access as something to be negotiated in stages rather than assumed as durable supply.

Musk has also shaped the public reading of the relationship before. In February 2026, he criticized Anthropic on X, including a post calling the company “hates Western civilization.” Against that backdrop, the lease looks less like a settled alliance than a cautious truce in a fast-moving AI arms race, where every term on duration, exclusivity and cancellation rights can signal how much trust actually exists between the companies. SpaceX and Anthropic did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside regular business hours.
