Natasha Lyonne Responds After Being Escorted Off Delta Flight Post-Premiere

Natasha Lyonne was escorted off a Delta Airlines red-eye at Los Angeles International Airport in the early hours of April 8, just hours after appearing at the Season 3 premiere of HBO's "Euphoria" at the TCL Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. When she finally broke her silence the next day, she did not deny a single detail.

The 47-year-old actress was still wearing much of her premiere ensemble when she boarded the flight bound for New York City: a sheer top, black stockings, and dark sunglasses, to which she had added a long black coat and sneakers. Seated in first class, she appeared to doze off behind her sunglasses as flight attendants made repeated requests for her to close her laptop and fasten her seatbelt before takeoff. She did not respond. At one point she startled awake and said, "Ah! You scared me!" Crew members ultimately removed the laptop from her hands.

The aircraft had already taxied toward the runway when it returned to the gate. A Delta employee boarded the plane and asked her, "Ma'am, do you need medical attention?" Lyonne was overheard saying, "Where are we?" and was told the plane had not left Los Angeles. A staffer then told her directly: "The plane is not going anywhere until you come off it." She reportedly shushed a gate agent, disappeared into the aircraft bathroom, emerged eating a bag of pretzels, and exited the plane. The incident delayed the flight by over an hour.

Before departure, the captain addressed the remaining passengers, saying someone "wouldn't follow some basic commands" and "didn't seem up to the task tonight" and had been booked on another flight, offering an apology for the delay. The flight departed without further incident, Lyonne's first-class seat empty.

Delta told Entertainment Weekly it had "nothing to add" to reports about the actress. Her representatives did not immediately respond to press requests.

On April 9, Lyonne addressed the episode on X: "My heart is with all the unpaid TSA agents at our airports. Sure was looking forward to speaking honestly with @DrewBarrymore yesterday but guess wasn't in the cards. Who owns page six/New York Post now again?" The post took a sideways shot at the outlet that broke the story, invoked the partial government shutdown affecting federal workers, and referenced a scheduled appearance on The Drew Barrymore Show in New York that she had missed. It offered no direct denial.

The incident arrives at a fraught moment in Lyonne's public recovery. On January 23, she announced on X that she had relapsed after nearly 10 years of sobriety, writing "Took my relapse public more to come" and following with: "Recovery is a lifelong process. Anyone out there struggling, remember you're not alone." Less than three weeks before the Euphoria premiere, on March 19, she updated followers: "Proud to report this kid is doing a whole lot better & back on her feet."

Her history with addiction has never been hidden. She was arrested for DUI in 2001 and pled guilty, receiving six months of probation, then entered rehab in 2006. In a 2012 interview with Entertainment Weekly, she said she was "definitely as good as dead" during her worst years and added: "A lot of people don't come back."

Lyonne appears as a guest star in Euphoria Season 3, which premieres on HBO on Sunday, April 13. Her specific character has been kept under wraps. The season features 28 new cast members, among them Sharon Stone, Rosalía, Eli Roth, Trisha Paytas, Danielle Deadwyler, Sam Trammell, and Kwame Patterson. A five-time Emmy nominee, Lyonne built her reputation across Orange Is the New Black, Russian Doll, which she also created and produced, Poker Face, and the American Pie franchise. Her Euphoria role marks the latest chapter of a career that has always tracked closely alongside the life she has lived off screen.
