Nye County Sleep in Heavenly Peace Builds Record 34 Beds
A community build produced 34 new beds in one day, a Nye County SHP record that supplies mattresses and bedding to local children and strengthens local safety nets.

A Winter Bed Build in Pahrump produced 34 new beds in a single day, the most the Nye County chapter of Sleep in Heavenly Peace has ever assembled. The event, held Saturday, Jan. 10, brought together 31 volunteers who cut, screwed and assembled frames that will be fitted with new mattresses, pillows and bedding before home delivery to children who otherwise might be sleeping on couches, in shared beds or on floors.
Nye County SHP Treasurer Michelle Caird confirmed the one-day total set a new record for the local chapter. “The volunteers were over the top incredible! Judge Kim Wanker, who was there overseeing the Drug Court volunteers, gave them the challenge that she wanted 34 beds built and they came through!” Caird enthused. She provided the volunteer breakdown: “We had 22 volunteers from Drug Court and there were 31 volunteers in all. Many of the volunteers belong to various organizations, such as Ms. Senior Golden Years, the Nevada Silver Tappers, Soroptmist International Pahrump Valley, the Pahrump Holiday Task Force and the Cub Scouts,” Caird continued. “Building 34 beds was an incredible feat from lots of hard-working volunteers. The weather was a bit chilly but it was great for all of the work that was accomplished. Overall, it was a huge success.
Thank you to everyone who donated their time to achieve our mission of ‘No kid sleeps on the floor in our town!’”
Sleep in Heavenly Peace is a national nonprofit whose stated mission is to provide beds and bedding to children in need. The organization’s website explains the gap this work fills: “So many great charities provide clothing, meals and toys to families in need. But as wonderful as this aid is, few organizations offer suitable beds and bedding to the kids in these families,” the organization’s website details. “At SHP, we fully believe that a bed is a basic need for the proper physical, emotional and mental support that a child needs.”
For Nye County residents, the practical effect is immediate and measurable: 34 households will receive complete sleep setups without having to purchase or transport bulky items themselves. The event also highlights the economic role of volunteer-driven in-kind assistance in a rural county where families face higher transportation costs and limited retail options. If the chapter maintains a twice-yearly cadence of builds, this pace could translate to roughly 68 beds annually, amplifying the nonprofit’s impact on child welfare and household budgets.
Nye County SHP leaders say beds will be delivered directly to homes; residents seeking help or wishing to volunteer can contact President Carmen Murzyn at 775-910-8921 or chapter bed delivery lead Steve Filarowski at 775-764-8726. The record build demonstrates local capacity to mobilize civic groups and court volunteer programs for basic needs, and it reinforces a practical community standard: fewer children in Nye County will go to bed without a bed.
