Passenger recalls fire and panic after plane strikes person on runway
A Frontier jet hit a trespasser seconds after takeoff began, triggering a brief engine fire and a chaotic evacuation that left passengers fearing for their lives.

A Frontier Airlines jet bound for Los Angeles aborted takeoff at Denver International Airport after striking a person on Runway 17L, setting off a brief engine fire and forcing an emergency evacuation down slides. The Airbus A321 carried 224 passengers and seven crew members, turning a routine departure into a runway-safety breakdown that raised immediate questions about airport access and perimeter security.
Mohamed Hassan, a passenger on Flight 4345, said the cabin erupted in fear as the aircraft lurched to a stop. "I was on the flight and I looked to my right and I just saw a fire, I heard a loud boom, people started screaming." Hassan said he thought he was going to die and that passengers remained trapped on the plane for about three minutes before evacuating. He also said he inhaled a lot of toxic fumes as smoke spread through the cabin.

Airport officials said the unidentified person had jumped a perimeter fence and was struck about two minutes after entering the airport. The collision happened shortly after 11 p.m. local time, with officials citing about 11:19 p.m. on Friday night. Air traffic control audio captured the pilot telling the tower, "We just hit somebody," as the aircraft came to a stop on the runway.
The evacuation left 12 people reporting minor injuries, and five were taken to hospitals. Frontier said federal investigators were notified after the incident, which halted a flight headed to Los Angeles International Airport. The immediate damage was visible in the brief engine fire; the larger question is how a trespasser reached an active runway and whether security, surveillance and response procedures moved quickly enough to stop the strike before passengers and crew were put at risk.
