Performers withdraw from Great American State Fair amid political backlash

Martina McBride, Bret Michaels, Young MC and other performers moved to distance themselves from the Great American State Fair as the patriotic showcase on the National Mall turned into a political flashpoint. The withdrawals came after Freedom 250 unveiled a lineup for the 16-day event, scheduled to run from June 25 through July 10, 2026, in Washington, D.C.

Freedom 250 had billed the fair as a centerpiece of the nation’s 250th-anniversary celebrations, stretching across the National Mall from the U.S. Capitol to the Washington Monument and featuring concert stages, state pavilions, exhibits, rides and other attractions. The organization said the event was meant to be a nonpartisan, unifying celebration of America’s semiquincentennial, but the artist exits quickly undercut that message.

Morris Day was among the first to push back, saying, “It’s a no for me.” Young MC said he had told his agents he would not perform and hoped to play in Washington at an event “not so politically charged.” Bret Michaels later said the fair had become “much more divisive” than what he agreed to join, and CNBC reported that he was the fifth performer to withdraw. Martina McBride was also listed among those stepping away.

The backlash landed against a broader effort that has increasingly blurred civic commemoration and partisan branding. President Donald Trump said on Saturday, May 30, 2026, that he was considering replacing the concerts with an “AMERICA IS BACK Rally” and a speech on the National Mall. In a Truth Social post, he called himself the “Number One Attraction” and said he drew larger crowds than Elvis.

The Great American State Fair sits inside the larger Freedom 250 initiative, which the White House described in 2025 as a public-private partnership meant to coordinate celebrations of the United States’ 250th anniversary. The White House said the commemoration would culminate with a festival on the National Mall in July 2026 and include exhibits from all 50 states. The National Park Service says the 250th commemoration will include more than 400 historic places and signature events such as the Great American State Fair, Salute to America 250 fireworks, Sail 4th 250 and the IndyCar DC Street Race.

What was meant to project national unity has instead become a test of who gets to define patriotism in public space. With artists retreating and Trump signaling a rally-style takeover, the fight over America 250 has become a preview of how cultural events can be recast as partisan territory before they even begin.
