Seniors Mia McGaha, Reagan Syring and Layla Suto, and junior Calleigh Boyer were named to the all-league flag football team, Oak Harbor High School announced on its Facebook page on Monday. A yearbook photo by Levi Evans shows quarterback Layla Suto, left, identified in the announcement as one of the four Wildcats honored.

Although their inaugural season is in the books, the Wildcats’ varsity flag football team closed the regular season with a 9-1 record and a second-place finish in the Northwest Conference behind the Lynden Lions. The accolade came just a little under a month after the Wildcats lost 14-0 to the Seattle Prep Panthers in the first round of the state playoffs, eliminating them from the postseason.

Individual recognitions reflected roles on both sides of the ball. Mia McGaha, a senior listed as a wide receiver and safety, made 1st team defense and 2nd team offense. Reagan Syring, also a senior and listed as a wide receiver and safety, was named to 2nd team offense. Quarterback Layla Suto earned 2nd team quarterback honors. Junior Calleigh Boyer, listed at linebacker and wide receiver, received an honorable mention for defense.

McGaha credited teammates and coaches for the breakthrough season, telling the News-Times, "I’m very thankful for our amazing team that helped us accomplish all that we did, as well as our great coaches who led us through this new program," and added, "... I’m proud of not only my own performance, but also of my teammates’."

Coach Mike Lonborg said he is proud of the players who made the team and of the team itself for a successful inaugural season, and he framed the achievement as the start of a long-term program identity: "established traditions and a culture that will be the foundation for years to come of this program and all the players that follow in their footsteps."

Athletic Director Jay Turner explained the mechanics of the selections, noting that the all-league honors covered a larger pool this season because flag football participation varies across schools. Turner said the honors are for "both Wesco and the Northwest Conference as flag football combined conferences this year, as not all schools offer a flag football team."

The combined recognition caps a 2025-26 campaign that produced a standout regular-season record and postseason experience for Oak Harbor’s first varsity flag football squad. With three seniors among the honorees and a junior named, the program returns to Island County carrying the kind of league recognition Coach Lonborg called foundational for seasons to come.
