EPA certification documents filed in April 2026 and surfaced by Rivian Forums community members confirmed the 2027 R2 Performance Launch Package at 335 miles of range, five miles beyond Rivian's own pre-certification estimate of 330 miles. For a company that has historically fallen short of range projections on some models, clearing its own bar is itself a data point worth noting.

The real consumer decision embedded in those documents involves tires. The 335-mile figure applies specifically to the Performance trim fitted with 21-inch Pirelli Scorpion MS all-season rubber. Swap those for the 20-inch BFGoodrich Trail Terrain T/A all-terrain tires, a natural choice given Rivian's "Electric Adventure Vehicle" positioning, and the EPA-rated range drops to 314 miles, a 21-mile, 6.3% penalty. Even that figure surpassed Rivian's own earlier projection of 307 miles for the all-terrain configuration, meaning both tire setups overdelivered against internal estimates. The all-terrain tires add 18 lbs to curb weight, pushing the vehicle from 4,998 lbs to 5,016 lbs against a 6,173-lb GVWR.

For road trips, the 335-mile headline range comes with meaningful supporting numbers. EPA testing measured usable battery capacity at 88.67 kWh, slightly above Rivian's advertised 87.9-kWh pack in the new 4695 cell format on a 400V architecture. The certification documents confirmed peak DC fast charging at 217 kW through a native NACS connector, meaning the R2 plugs directly into Tesla Superchargers without an adapter. Rivian pegs the 10%-to-80% charge window at approximately 29 minutes, implying an average charge rate of roughly 107 kW. That is functional for highway stops, though somewhat slower than the R1's average of about 125 kW, a product of the smaller pack.

Cold-weather range gets a meaningful assist from Rivian's redesigned heat pump, confirmed as standard equipment in the EPA filing. An earlier filing had not included the heat pump, creating brief uncertainty in the Rivian community before the updated documents resolved the question. Heat pumps draw far less energy than resistive heaters, making the 335-mile figure more defensible in winter than it would otherwise be.

On efficiency, the R2 Performance scored 144 MPGe combined, outpacing the Tesla Model Y's 138 MPGe and placing it among the most efficient electric SUVs the EPA has tested. The R2's 88.67-kWh usable battery also exceeds the Model Y's maximum 79-kWh pack. The Model Y Performance holds the edge in acceleration, reaching 60 mph in 3.3 seconds against the R2's 3.6, and the Model Y Premium RWD leads on range at 357 miles. But at $57,990 before destination, the R2 Performance delivers 656 horsepower and 609 lb-ft of torque, numbers that sharpen its value case in the segment. The efficiency advantage is partly structural: by abandoning the R1's body-on-frame architecture for a new unibody platform, Rivian shed roughly 2,000 lbs from vehicle weight, the primary lever behind the improved energy consumption numbers.

A less powerful Premium dual-motor AWD trim at approximately $53,990 is expected in late 2026, followed by a Long Range single-motor rear-wheel-drive version at $47,900 in the first half of 2027. The base Standard trim targeting approximately $45,000 is not expected until late 2027.

Built at Rivian's Normal, Illinois facility, the R2 entered employee deliveries in April 2026, with first customer deliveries expected by June, prioritizing existing R1 owners. Rivian has set a production target of 20,000 to 25,000 R2s this year, a threshold that will test whether the range numbers earned in a testing lab hold up at manufacturing scale.
