Five people were killed and 21 others wounded when a Russian FPV drone struck a covered market in the frontline city of Nikopol on Saturday morning, adding to a mounting civilian toll from intensified Russian aerial attacks across Ukraine. The strike hit the market's trading pavilions at approximately 9:50 a.m. local time, setting off a fire that gutted several commercial stalls and a nearby shop.

Among the dead were three women and two men, according to Dnipropetrovsk Regional Military Administration Head Oleksandr Hanzha, who confirmed the casualty figures on Telegram. A 14-year-old girl was hospitalized in critical condition, one of the more severely wounded among the 21 injured. Ukraine's prosecutor general's office condemned the attack, calling it "yet another war crime committed by the Russian Federation."

Nikopol sits on the southern bank of the Dnipro River, directly across from Russian-occupied territory, making it a persistent target for bombardment. The city has absorbed repeated drone and artillery strikes throughout the war, but Saturday's attack on a crowded civilian market drew particular condemnation. A fire at the scene required emergency crews to respond before the blaze spread further into the market complex.

The Nikopol strike was part of a broader overnight and morning offensive in which Russia launched 286 drones at Ukraine, 260 of which were downed by Ukrainian air defenses, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. Additional strikes hit Sumy in the northeast, where 11 people were injured including a 15-year-old, and Kharkiv, Ukraine's second-largest city, where five more people were wounded.

The attacks unfolded as Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was in Istanbul for talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a meeting focused on security cooperation and diplomatic efforts related to the ongoing war. The timing of Russia's intensified daytime strikes, a tactical shift Ukrainian officials have repeatedly flagged in recent weeks, underscored the disconnect between the diplomatic track and the ground reality in Ukrainian cities still absorbing daily bombardment.
