San Juan County confirms three measles cases exposed outside county; no transmission
San Juan Public Health confirmed three county residents tested positive for measles after exposures outside the county; officials say there is no transmission risk to local residents.

San Juan Public Health Department confirmed three San Juan County residents tested positive for measles after being exposed outside the county and have not returned, and officials say the cases pose no risk of local transmission. "As a result, there is no transmission risk to San Juan County residents," the department said, according to KSL's Feb. 4, 2026 report.
The department and local outlets emphasized that the infections will be logged to the county where the patients live under standard counting rules. Sjrnews reported that the three individuals are "San Juan County residents (currently residing outside of the county)" and that the infections "will be counted as San Juan County cases in accordance with standard practice." Despite the case attribution, there remain no confirmed measles infections among people physically residing in San Juan County at this time, KSL and World Infonasional noted.
Public-health officials urged San Juan County residents to confirm their immunity status with health care providers. San Juan Public Health told Sjrnews that the MMR vaccine is effective: "It's incredibly effective and has been one of the most powerful tools for reducing the spread of measles for many years." World Infonasional and Sjrnews both recommended the two-dose MMR series as the strongest protection and encouraged people to check immunization records or consult a clinician. Sjrnews also reiterated the conventional guidance that people born before 1957 are likely to have had measles as children and are considered immune.

The announcement comes amid a rising statewide outbreak with differing totals reported on different dates. Gephardt Daily reported 237 documented cases in Utah as of Feb. 1, 2026, while World Infonasional cited the Utah Department of Health and Human Services dashboard listing 251 total cases in a dashboard update noted by sources (the dashboard snapshot reported 48 confirmed cases in the past three weeks and was last updated Feb. 3, 2026, according to a dashboard schedule quoted in reporting). County-level clusters elsewhere include one minor case in Grand County in September 2025 that was also exposed out of county, and three cases in Montezuma County, Colorado in December 2025, as reported by Sjrnews.
San Juan Public Health said it will continue monitoring regional spread and post updates as needed: "We continue to monitor the spread of measles in the surrounding area and will provide any updates on cases." For residents, the immediate takeaway is reassurance that there is no evidence of in-county spread, paired with practical steps to reduce risk: verify MMR vaccination status, speak with your health care provider, and watch for public-health updates should the situation change.
