Sanford breaks ground on $5.3M Fort Mellon amphitheater, Lake Carola upgrades
Sanford breaks ground March 4 on a $5.3 million Fort Mellon Park renovation, a six-month build by S.A. Casey Construction that adds a state-of-the-art amphitheater and Lake Carola shoreline upgrades.

Sanford city officials broke ground March 4 at Fort Mellon Park, 600 E. First Street, launching a $5.3 million renovation that will add a centrally located amphitheater and simultaneous shoreline and bank improvements around Lake Carola. The ceremony began at 2 p.m. Wednesday and marks the start of a six-month construction timetable funded by the Sanford Community Redevelopment Agency and the City of Sanford, with S.A. Casey Construction slated to lead the work.
Officials described the project with a clear dual aim: community programming and historic preservation. "The project aims to add a modern event space while enhancing the surrounding park landscape," city materials say. The new performance venue, positioned near the former site of Fort Mellon, "will be equipped with a state-of-the-art audio-visual system designed to accommodate various types of community events. Officials intend for the facility to preserve local history while serving future generations."
Work west of the amphitheater will focus on Lake Carola and its public access. "Simultaneously, crews will work west of the amphitheater to enhance the area surrounding Lake Carola. This portion of the project includes new landscaping, hardscape and bank enhancements to allow for easier pedestrian access," project information states. Lake Carola, the planners note, "was named after the granddaughter of Henry Sanford and previously featured a showcase garden with arboretum paths."
Financial and delivery details are specific: the $5.3 million cost is covered by the Sanford CRA and the City of Sanford, and S.A. Casey Construction is the contractor on a six-month schedule. Project messaging highlights connectivity, noting that the work "connects to the park’s existing promenade and iconic serpentine walk, creating a vibrant, scenic destination for community events and everyday enjoyment." The amphitheater is also billed as a "gracious amphitheater" that "will also boast a state-of-the-art audio-visual system to assuredly handle many types of events."
Several technical and logistical items remain to be confirmed with city or contractor documents. Public materials do not yet list amphitheater seating capacity, the detailed audio-visual specifications, an architectural or landscape design firm, or a breakdown of the CRA and City funding contributions. Officials have not publicly clarified whether the six-month schedule runs from the March 4 groundbreaking date or from a later construction mobilization, nor have they released event traffic, parking or temporary park-closure plans.
Fort Mellon Park’s grounds reflect a long local history: Fort Mellon was established in 1836 and served as a significant U.S. Army fortress, and Lake Carola carries a direct tie to Henry Sanford’s family. As construction proceeds under S.A. Casey Construction, city leaders say the project will reshape the park’s central lawn, promenade and lakeshore to support downtown Sanford events while acknowledging the site’s historical roots.
