Shergar Cup becomes World Pool fixture as HKJC fields first team
Ascot’s 25th Shergar Cup will be run as a World Pool wagering fixture and the Hong Kong Jockey Club will field its first dedicated three-rider team, led by Vincent Ho, on 8 August 2026.

Ascot Racecourse and the Hong Kong Jockey Club announced that the Dubai Duty Free Shergar Cup will be staged as a World Pool wagering fixture for the first time and that the HKJC will field its own team, captained by Vincent Ho, at the six-race meeting on Saturday 8 August 2026 - a move that immediately raises questions about how a commingled global pool will reshape betting liquidity and market pricing for the event.
Nick Smith, Ascot’s director of racing, framed the change as an evolution for the event, saying, "This will be the 25th running of the Shergar Cup at Ascot and it's exciting to see another evolution of the event, with World Pool and Hong Kong Jockey Club involvement for the first time." Smith added, "As ever we are hugely grateful to Dubai Duty Free for their support of this event, and of British and Irish racing as a whole."
Organisers point to World Pool’s scale as the commercial rationale. Racingnews Hkjc described the integration as significant, saying, "The integration of the World Pool – now in its eighth year and powered by a collaboration of more than 20 international wagering partners who commingle into a single global pool operated by the HKJC – represents a major development for the Shergar Cup." The same release noted, "With global participation, World Pool consistently delivers high liquidity, competitive pricing and unmatched depth of international betting engagement across the world’s leading racedays."
The Hong Kong Jockey Club confirmed its team will replace the Asia side used in previous years and will comprise three riders licensed to ride in Hong Kong. Andrew Harding, HKJC executive director of racing, said, "We are excited to be represented with our own team this year, especially when Vincent Ho, a world-class product of our renowned apprentice jockeys' school in Hong Kong and the regular rider of former champion Golden Sixty, will captain The Hong Kong Jockey Club's side." Vincent Ho, who rode at the Shergar Cup in 2019 and contributed to the Rest of the World team's success that year, said, "Returning to the Shergar Cup as captain is a tremendous honour. It’s a unique chance to showcase the strength and depth of Hong Kong racing on a world stage."

Team appointments beyond Ho have not been published; the HKJC release and TDN both state the team will include three Hong Kong-licensed riders but list no further names. Racingpost imagery noted Suraj Narredu "will be in action at the Shergar Cup again," but final riding line-ups for the Great Britain & Ireland, Ladies and Rest of the World squads remain pending.
Organisers also confirmed Jamie Melham will captain the Rest of the World team and act as a global event ambassador. TDN reported, "Australian jockey Jamie Melham, who made history in 2025 when becoming the first female to complete the Caulfield Cup–Melbourne Cup double aboard Half Yours, will captain the Rest of the World team. She will also act as a global event ambassador for the Shergar Cup." Melham previously rode in the Shergar Cup in 2019 under her maiden name Kah.
With the 25th running set for 8 August 2026 and six races on the card, the immediate storylines are now clear: which Hong Kong riders join Vincent Ho, how World Pool partners influence the betting pools across the 20-plus commingled markets, and whether global wagering liquidity alters race-day pricing at Ascot. Full team rosters and individual race assignments have yet to be released ahead of the summer meeting.
