Springstead’s defense and a late first-half strike from senior Douglas Kelly carried the Eagles to a 1-0 victory over Belleview in a tense district semifinal at Booster Stadium. The result sends the 17-5 Eagles to the district final, where they will host the second-seed Gainesville Hurricanes (6-7-2) at 7:30 on Wednesday.

Senior Douglas Kelly broke the deadlock with seconds remaining in the opening period. Kelly took an in-bounds pass, weaved between defenders, and fired a low shot into the bottom right corner as the half expired. The goal proved to be the difference in a game dominated by defensive stands and several narrow misses by Springstead.

“Dougie (Douglas Kelly) is a great leader for us, a great player,” Coach Dominic Coco said. “One of the heart and souls of our team, especially in the midfield. Very happy for him to get the game-winning goal for us and to advance into the finals.”

Earlier chances suggested the final margin could have been wider. About 10 minutes into the matchup, senior Kody Levasseur’s free kick was headed off the line when Belleview’s goalkeeper dove and absorbed the shot with his torso. Sophomore Tyler Siebe later took a long pass near the goal and fired, but the shot went wide right after a defender disrupted his kick. Junior Giovanni Hernandez sent two nearly identical free kicks from the right to the left side of the goal that almost connected with Kelly on headers within a two-minute span late in the first half.

Belleview, which finishes the season 4-11-2, fought to create second-half chances but was repeatedly denied by Springstead goalkeeper Evan Serrano. With 17:30 left in the match, Serrano punched away a dangerous attempt by Belleview freshman Connor Campbell and preserved the shutout as Belleview pressed to erase the deficit.

“Getting the win is always great, especially advancing to the final,” Coach Coco said. “I think we came out a little shaky tonight, whether it was nerves, whether it was just missed opportunities. Fortunately, we got out of here, which is great, with the win, but you can’t do that in the playoffs.”

The victory extends Springstead’s postseason run and gives Spring Hill fans a home district final to attend. For local residents, good high school sports offer more than weekend entertainment: they foster youth development, community cohesion, and opportunities for student-athletes to build discipline and leadership. At the same time, the contrast between Springstead’s deep run and Belleview’s struggles highlights broader issues across Hernando County schools, including disparities in program resources and access to consistent training and medical support that shape competitive balance and athlete safety.

Coach Coco emphasized preparation for the next challenge. “ We just need to be more prepared and ready to go starting Monday in training,” he said. “That is all it is going to be now is preparation and who wants it more.” Fans can expect a lively atmosphere at the district final as Springstead aims to convert defensive resilience into a championship berth.
