Suffolk County Sheriff Opens First History Exhibit at Riverhead for Suffolk 250
Suffolk County Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. opened the Sheriff’s Office’s first public history exhibit at Riverhead Town Hall, on display at 4 W. 2nd St. through June 9, 2026.

Sheriff Errol D. Toulon, Jr. opened the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office’s first history exhibit at Riverhead Town Hall on Feb. 25, placing a curated collection of artifacts, historic photographs, uniform items and a timeline on public display at 4 W. 2nd St. in Riverhead. The showcase runs through June 9, 2026, and is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., closed on holidays.
The exhibit traces the Sheriff’s Office back to its 1683 origins and frames the agency’s arc as 343 years of local law enforcement history. Visitors will encounter a timeline that highlights evolving responsibilities of the office alongside archival materials and items described by organizers as notable cases and historic photographs. Sheriff Toulon said, "As one of the oldest law enforcement agencies in the Nation, we are proud to celebrate our long and rich history," and added, "We thank the Town of Riverhead for hosting our first showcase and look forward to more exhibits and events with communities across the county."
Riverhead officials joined the opening. Riverhead Town Supervisor Jerry Halpin said, "It’s an honor and a privilege for the Town of Riverhead to house the first historical showcase of the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office. I invite the greater Riverhead community to come and explore the legacy of the Sheriff’s Office as told through the artifacts and stories being exhibited." During the visit Sheriff Toulon met with Supervisor Halpin and Riverhead Town Historian Georgette Case to discuss Riverhead’s historical roots and the partnership hosting the display.
Organizers positioned the Riverhead showcase as the first stop in the Sheriff’s Office’s participation in Suffolk 250, the countywide commemoration of 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The Sheriff’s Office said it plans to continue holding exhibits and special events across Suffolk County; the agency’s headquarters sits across the Peconic River from downtown Riverhead in Riverside, underscoring the local connection.

Practical details for visitors are limited to weekdays; no weekend hours or a specific room inside Town Hall were provided with the announcement. The exhibit’s public materials describe artifacts and uniform items but do not list individual case names or item-by-item captions in the initial release. Media and historians who want to examine particular artifacts or request images are advised to contact the Sheriff’s Office for press materials and the schedule of future countywide stops tied to Suffolk 250.
The Riverhead Town Hall showcase offers a concentrated look at the Sheriff’s Office’s stated 343-year lineage, situating that narrative within Suffolk 250 and signaling the agency’s intent to bring historical displays to additional towns across the county between now and June 9, 2026.
