Sumpter Junction model train returns as restaurant prepares reopening
The Browns have refurbished Sumpter Junction and restarted the iconic model train after nearly six years closed; breakfast and lunch service will resume, restoring a local gathering spot.

Nearly six years after a pandemic shutdown halted the model train that long defined Sumpter Junction, the restaurant’s steel wheels are rolling again and the Browns are preparing to reopen to the public later this winter. The family business, bought by brothers Tyler and Luke Brown from their parents, has undergone a full interior remodel and mechanical refresh while preserving the dining room’s signature miniature railroad.
The restaurant had been closed since March 2020. As of January 16 the Browns were still hiring staff, and they said they would likely open before a planned March 14 celebration marking the six-year anniversary of the closure. When it reopens, Sumpter Junction will serve breakfast and lunch from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., with a menu largely similar to what locals remember.
Renovations focused on visibility, safety and infrastructure. Workers removed a few walls and some booths and added a counter with stools so more diners, including children, can watch the train. The kitchen was gutted and upgraded; lighting was updated; and plumbing and electrical systems were inspected and serviced. The general plan balanced keeping the place familiar with correcting longstanding maintenance issues that accumulated during the closure.
The train remains the restaurant’s iconic feature. The track layout and many of the miniature buildings and details were designed and built locally, and blueprints for the display exist. The Browns continued to run the train periodically through the closure to keep it operational—routine maintenance such as dusting the track is laborious and the engine can be cantankerous, and when the train doesn’t run the dining-room mood suffers.

For Baker City and surrounding areas, the reopening restores more than a place to grab an omelet. Sumpter Junction has been a gathering point for a couple of generations of diners, a small-town institution that contributes to downtown foot traffic and local identity. Reopening also brings near-term employment opportunities, with the Browns actively hiring in mid-January to staff breakfast and lunch shifts.
The rebuild leaves the restaurant recognizable to regulars while improving sight lines and serviceability for staff. Photographs of the remodel and the restored train show the same miniature townscapes and brass rails that have long been a conversation starter for families.
Expect Sumpter Junction to return to regular service within weeks. For locals, that means a familiar breakfast seat, a renewed place for community conversation and the clack of tiny wheels on brass rails back in Baker County’s dining circuit.
