Super Corredora Opens Sophomore Campaign Against Explora in Compact Las Virgenes
Super Corredora was set to begin her sophomore season in the Las Virgenes at Santa Anita, a rematch with Explora that shapes the early 3-year-old filly pecking order.

Super Corredora, the 2025 Eclipse champion 2-year-old filly and Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies winner, was scheduled to open her sophomore season in the Las Virgenes Stakes at Santa Anita in a compact four-horse field that creates a high-stakes rematch with Explora. The one-mile matchup between the one-two finishers from the Oct. 31 Breeders’ Cup at Del Mar delivers a clear early-season storyline for the 3-year-old filly division.
The Las Virgenes drew Super Corredora, Explora, Meaning, and Bank Shot. Super Corredora made her championship credentials in front-running fashion at Del Mar, winning the 1 1/16-mile Juvenile Fillies and holding off Explora by three-quarters of a length, a performance that sealed the Eclipse Award. Since then she has been freshening up and preparing for this return, turning in three consecutive bullet works at Santa Anita: 5 furlongs in :59 1/5 on Jan. 11, a keen :59 4/5 on Jan. 19, and 5 furlongs in 1:00 1/5 on Jan. 26. Trainer John Sadler will send the Gun Runner filly out with Hector Berrios aboard; "Regular rider Hector Berrios again has the call on Super Corredora."
Explora brings recent race form to the equation. The Blame filly rebounded after the Breeders’ Cup to win the Santa Ynez Stakes at Santa Anita on Jan. 10, taking the seven-furlong test by 5 1/4 lengths. That decisive return gives Explora a clear recency edge over Super Corredora, who has not raced since Del Mar. Trainer Bob Baffert’s trainee arrives as a proven two-turn performer as well, with prior placings in top juvenile races such as the G2 Oak Leaf and the G1 Del Mar Debutante.
Beyond the head-to-head, the matchup matters commercially and culturally. Super Corredora’s $400,000 purchase price at the 2024 Keeneland September Yearling Sale, reportedly bought by West Point Thoroughbreds out of the Denali Stud consignment, now looks like an investment paying early dividends in both prestige and potential broodmare value. A strong sophomore debut under Sadler and Berrios would preserve her championship narrative and bolster her marketability for owners Spartan Equine Racing, West Point Thoroughbreds, Robert C. Gardiner / Robert Gardiner, and Michael W. Olszewski / Michael Olszewski.
For fans and bettors the compact field promises straightforward tactical intrigue: will Super Corredora’s front-running inclination surface again, or will Explora’s fitness allow her to dictate terms? The Las Virgenes also plays into the broader winter stakes ecosystem at Santa Anita, which features a tricky Clockers’ Corner hillside turf test for older horses on the same card. Early-season stakes like this shape Kentucky Oaks hopefuls and influence stallion and broodmare valuations across the industry.
What comes next is practical and immediate: post positions and morning-line odds will further define strategy, but the core narrative is set. This rematch is not just about one mile at Santa Anita; it is about the opening chapter in a 3-year-old division that will drive sales, breeding decisions, and fan attention through spring.
