Teenage boy dies after targeted stabbing near Peterborough shopping centre
A 16-year-old boy died after a stabbing near Ortongate Shopping Centre, as police arrested four teenagers and kept a cordon around the scene.

A 16-year-old boy died after being stabbed in Riseholme, near Ortongate Shopping Centre in Peterborough, in a case detectives say was targeted rather than random. Cambridgeshire Police were called just before 19:00 BST on Sunday, 12 April 2026, and the teenager later died in hospital.
Four teenagers have now been arrested. Police said a 15-year-old boy and an 18-year-old man, both from Peterborough, were held on suspicion of murder. A 17-year-old girl from Peterborough was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender, while a 16-year-old girl from March was arrested on suspicion of assisting an offender and possession of a bladed article. All four remained in custody on Monday.
The attack has left a heavy police footprint around one of Peterborough’s busiest retail areas. A cordon stayed in place around the shopping centre, with officers expecting to keep an increased presence in the coming days. The centre remained open, but the rear car park was closed, turning a familiar public space into an active crime scene as detectives worked to establish the sequence of events.
The case has also disrupted life beyond the shopping centre itself. St John's Church School in Peterborough said it closed because police were processing a site close to the school. The school said it would keep monitoring the situation and update parents and carers about reopening. The shutdown underlines how quickly violence near a shopping precinct can ripple into nearby streets, transport routes and daily routines.
Det Ch Insp Richard Stott of the Beds, Cambs and Herts Major Crime Unit said officers were in contact with the boy’s family and keeping them updated. He also urged anyone with information or home CCTV to contact police, a reminder that investigators are now relying on public footage and witness accounts to map the movements around Ortongate before and after the stabbing. For Peterborough, the case raises a familiar but urgent question: how to spot risk earlier around shopping centres, where teenagers gather, visibility is mixed, and violence can erupt in plain sight.
