TMNT Universes Beyond set spotlights Ninja Teen's Sneak graveyard synergy

Goonhammer’s set review singled out Ninja Teen as the TMNT set’s most explosive Commander card, calling attention to a graveyard Sneak line that reads as Sneak {3}{B} and a six-mana late-game payoff. Saffgor notes the card “pings opponents on deaths and more,” gains evasion, and then can be Sneak {3}{B} from the graveyard; he adds that Gorex, the Tombshell lists full of cost-reducers make that Sneak “~1 mana most of the time,” and that Ancient Cellarspawn can serve as a secret Commander in those lists.

The product drops onto Magic: the Gathering Arena and MTGO on March 3 and arrives on tabletop March 6, and that release cadence frames early build choices for pre-con and 99 upgrades. Kristen Gregory described TMNT as “something of a nostalgia trip,” while still calling out “well-designed and fun Magic cards.” Draftsim recommended Leonardo, the Balance as the most generically powerful of the character-select commanders because it “brings all five colors,” an observation that fits the Turtle Power! pre-con design: Niall Walsh notes that Leonardo is the pre-con’s face Commander and that the deck is “stacked with six possible Commander cards.”

Artifact and Ninja synergies crop up repeatedly in previews. Card Kingdom Blog wrote that “Splinter, Radical Rat ends up being the Esper commander to tie together the Orzhov and Dimir Ninjas of the set,” praising Splinter’s “doubler text that we’ve come to ~~tire of~~ love” and an activated ability that takes the card into “wow, pretty good” territory. Donatello appears as a cheap cheat for artifacts in Card Kingdom’s take: “Donatello, Gadget Master is sweet. You can sneak him for just two mana and get yourself a copy of an artifact,” a line the blog recommends for artifact and blue Equipment decks that might copy heaters such as Sword of Feast and Famine.

Token-and-counter strategies are clearly supported by Leonardo and High Score. Draftsim’s guidance that Leonardo is the best generic choice is reinforced by TheGamer’s Niall Walsh, who called High Score “a card we couldn't fathom removing” from the pre-con. Walsh explains High Score “adds an additional +1/+1 counter to any creature you control when any number of counters are being added to them,” turning a two-counter trigger from Leatherhead, Iron Gator into three counters and pushing readers to build into the +1/+1 counter plan.

Set mechanics and archetypes diverge beyond counters. Card Kingdom described The Last Ronin as “a solid board wipe tied to an enchantment” that pairs reanimation with a combat-based follow up, calling it “quite the powerful three course meal.” The 19 Best Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Commanders Ranked flagged Super Shredder as “an interesting sacrifice commander” that benefits from cracking Treasures and counting opponents’ permanents leaving play so it “becomes massive fast,” while the same list labeled Heroes in a Half Shell the expected five-color commander that nonetheless has “little identity.”

Preview coverage consistently points toward concrete deck choices: prioritize cost reducers and reanimation to exploit Ninja Teen’s Sneak recursion, lean on Leonardo or High Score for token-and-counter shells, and consider Splinter as the Esper route into energized Ninja tribal. Expect those threads to shape actual Commander lists once TMNT goes live on Arena and MTGO March 3 and ships to stores March 6.
