Valeriano Chiella’s Fico Cucina Moves Into Balcony Bar in Uptown New Orleans
Fico Cucina, chef Valeriano Chiella’s roaming pasta pop-up, has taken a permanent kitchen residency at Balcony Bar on Magazine Street, giving Uptown diners steady access to his gnocchi and other favorites.

Fico Cucina, the pasta pop-up created and operated by chef Valeriano Chiella, has moved from a nomadic schedule to a permanent kitchen residency inside Balcony Bar on Magazine Street in Uptown New Orleans. The change means regular access to signature dishes and gives Chiella room to refine recipes that were previously constrained by pop-up setups.
Valeriano Chiella launched Fico Cucina as a food pop-up in 2024 with the intention of slowing down after years in restaurant kitchens. Instead, he spent nearly a year popping up around local bars and taprooms, including Second Line Brewing, Miel Brewery and Taproom, and Peychaud’s Bar. That run exposed him to steady demand and new perspectives on service and food. “It gives me a different, a different perspective of what my job really is,” Chiella said. He added that the experience changed him personally and professionally: “The food pop-up made me a better person, a better cook, not in the sense of cooking, but in a sense of understanding.” He jokes about the unintended consequence of his busy schedule: “My wife was like, ‘Yeah, you will be home,’ and then it never happened,” he said.
The Balcony Bar residency brings a physical kitchen that allows Chiella to expand and refine his dishes more than was possible on a roaming setup. One of Fico Cucina’s most popular items, gnocchi, will remain a focal point and can be enjoyed with a spicy vodka sauce or a classic cacio e pepe. Photographs associated with Chiella’s work have also highlighted Chicken Milanese among his offerings, and Chiella’s Uptown menu promises to include the food regulars found at his pop-up stops.

Chiella was approached about running the kitchen at a new music venue slated to open on Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard in 2026; before that space opens, the owners offered him a home at their other venue, Balcony Bar. That sequence suggests a closer relationship between Chiella and local live-music operators and hints at potential future collaborations once the new venue opens.
For pasta lovers in Uptown and beyond, the move ends the scattershot chase for Fico Cucina’s plates and creates a dependable place to find handcrafted gnocchi and other favorites. Details such as the exact start date for the residency, hours of service, whether Chiella will continue pop-ups, and full menu pricing have not been announced. Expect regular updates as Chiella settles into Balcony Bar and as plans for the Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard venue develop.
