Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.8 APO surfaces with image and rumored specs
First-look image shows a Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.8 bearing an APO badge; PhotoRumors reports a 58mm filter thread and a 0.34 m close-focus for the 35mm, with E/Z/L mount plans.

MirrorlessRumors published a first-look image of a rumored Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.8 that shows an updated product design and an APO designation. PhotoRumors followed with a fuller product listing that prints the lens as “Viltrox AF 35mm f/1.8 STM ASPH ED IF APO full-frame lens for E/Z/L mount” and adds numbers that matter to shooters - a 58 mm filter thread and a 0.34 m close-focus distance for the 35mm.
PhotoRumors is explicit about the family framing: “The upcoming Viltrox 35mm f/1.8 EVO and Viltrox 55mm f/1.8 EVO full-frame lenses will both be APO designs.” PhotoRumors also states, “The lenses will have a 58mm filter thread, close-focusing distances of 0.34m and 0.43m, respectively, and will be available for Sony E, Nikon Z, and Leica L mounts.” Those are the technical callouts circulating now; no official Viltrox press copy appears in the supplied items.
Cameraegg frames the optical intent behind the badge: “The Viltrox 35mm f/1.8 APO lens is designed to deliver sharp, high-quality images with minimal chromatic aberration.” Cameraegg further explains in plain terms that, “As an APO lens, it uses specialized optical elements to correct color fringing and ensure that all colors are focused precisely on the sensor.” Cameraegg also repeats that “While no official release date or pricing has been announced, the first image of the lens has already generated interest among photographers and lens enthusiasts.”
Looking back at Viltrox’s prior 35mm, Cameralabs provides useful context for what an APO-marked update would need to improve on. Cameralabs reviewed the AF 35mm f/1.8 announced in September 2021 and reported that earlier model’s retail pricing was 350 EUR / 379 USD / 375 GBP, with a size of 70 x 85 mm and a hood that adds 38 mm. Cameralabs’ performance notes for that version included a dedicated aperture ring, minimal focus breathing, and “a nice soft Bokeh on less challenging backgrounds,” while calling out negatives such as lack of weather sealing, meagre maximum magnification, and relative softness wide open that required stopping down to f5.6 or even f8.0 for edge-to-edge sharpness.

There are naming and labelling discrepancies to reconcile across the reports. Some outlets use the shorter “AF 35mm f/1.8 APO” label, PhotoRumors prints the EVO suffix and the long “STM ASPH ED IF APO” string, and Leicarumors listed the item among “More new third-party M and M mount lenses announced at the 2026 CP+ show” with the long designation for L-mount. MirrorlessRumors flags the APO badge as meaningful, describing it as an “APO designation that suggests apochromatic correction aimed at reducing chromatic aberration,” while PhotoRumors and Cameraegg explicitly define APO benefits in their write-ups.
So what does this matter for working photographers? If the 35mm truly combines APO/ED optics and aspherics with STM drive and internal focusing - the exact elements implied by the PhotoRumors string - expect two practical shifts: less color fringing on high-contrast edges, and potentially improved wide-open sharpness compared with Viltrox’s 2021 model that Cameralabs found soft at f/1.8. The 0.34 m close-focus gives tighter environmental portraits and tighter detail work than typical 35 mm primes, and the 58 mm filter thread keeps round filters affordable and compatible with many existing kits.
For now the story is rooted in a first image, PhotoRumors’ technical listing, Cameraegg’s APO explanation, and Cameralabs’ 2021 baseline. If Viltrox brings APO-grade correction and the STM/ASPH/ED/IF hardware to E, Z, and L mounts without the premium price of legacy APO lenses, it would be a notable step for third-party primes; follow-up from Viltrox on official name, element counts, weather sealing, pricing, and availability will determine whether this is a genuine optical step up or primarily a marketing refresh.
