Wailua Golf Course Closed Feb. 2 Under High Wind Advisory
High winds forced the Wailua Golf Course to close Feb. 2 as a safety precaution; residents should expect facility disruptions and follow weather-advisory guidance.

High winds prompted the Department of Parks and Recreation to close the Wailua Golf Course on Feb. 2, 2026 as a safety measure during a National Weather Service high-wind advisory. The closure removed play and public access to the course on Kūhiō Highway that day and underscores ongoing hazards tied to gusty winds and coastal conditions.
“The Department of Parks and Recreation closed the Wailua Golf Course on Feb. 2, 2026, as a safety precaution during a National Weather Service high-wind advisory (south–southwest winds 20–30 mph with gusts up to 50 mph).” The advisory described south to southwest winds with sustained speeds of 20 to 30 mph and gusts up to 50 mph, and officials noted the advisory was in effect “through 6 a.m. Tuesday.” The county release directed the public to contact the Department of Parks and Recreation for more information.
The temporary shutdown interrupted bookings and on-course services at the municipal facility at 3-5350 Kuhio Highway. Course rules on the county page remain in force: “Heads up! Reservations are required all day now. No walk-ons allowed.” The site also notes that “All players must be signed in at the Registration Office before playing.” Visitors should also note posted food-service conditions: “The restaurant and snack shop are closed until further notice.” The course page advises: “Golfers are encouraged to bring their own food/snacks and non-alcoholic beverage(s). Limited selections may be available at the Pro Shop.”
Wailua Municipal Golf Course is a longstanding community asset, first built as a nine-hole layout in the 1930s with a second nine added in 1961 and designed by Toyo Shirai. The facility lists a full complement of amenities including a Golf Shop, locker room with showers, driving range, putting green, chipping green, practice bunker and an ATM. The county’s published hole yardages and pars for the back nine are listed as follows: Hole 10 — Blue 521 | White 490 | Par 5 | Hdcp 6 | Red 412 | Gold 395 | Par 5 | Hdcp 2 Hole 11 — Blue 370 | White 356 | Par 4 | Hdcp 10 | Red 316 | Gold 276 | Par 4 | Hdcp 10 Hole 12 — Blue 409 | White 390 | Par 4 | Hdcp 2 | Red 342 | Gold 312 | Par 4 | Hdcp 4 Hole 13 — Blue 535 | White 521 | Par 5 | Hdcp 14 | Red 456 | Gold 396 | Par 5 | Hdcp 12 Hole 14 — Blue 168 | White 168 | Par 3 | Hdcp 18 | Red 148 | Gold 122 | Par 3 | Hdcp 16 Hole 15 — Blue 434 | White 434 | Par 4 | Hdcp 4 | Red 416 | Gold 330 | Par 5/4 | Hdcp 14 Hole 16 — Blue 363 | White 346 | Par 4 | Hdcp 8 | Red 336 | Gold 244 | Par 4 | Hdcp 6 Hole 17 — Blue 173 | White 173 | Par 3 | Hdcp 16 | Red 112 | Gold 112 | Par 3 | Hdcp 18 Hole 18 — Blue 394 | White 371 | Par 4 | Hdcp 12 | Red 328 | Gold 300 | Par 4 | Hdcp 8 IN total — Blue 3367 | White 3249 | Par 36 | Red 2866 | Gold 2487 | Par 37 TOTAL — Blue 6961 | White 6554 | Par 72 | Red 5852 | Gold 4996 | Par 73 Note on Gold Tees: “Par 72” and “Note: 15th hole plays to a Par 4 from Gold Tees”

The closure at Wailua came amid broader weather impacts across the state that temporarily shuttered parks, recycling operations and county service centers, and prompted officials to warn of hazardous coastal conditions. A weather alert instructed: “Stay away from the shoreline along the affected coasts. Be prepared for road closures. Postpone entering or leaving channels affected by the high surf until the surf subsides.”
