Western National Parks Partners with Amistad NRA to Support Visitor Programs
Western National Parks added Amistad National Recreation Area as a partner to operate the visitor store and expand funding, research, and programs for Del Rio and Val Verde County residents.

Western National Parks (WNP) has added Amistad National Recreation Area as its newest National Park Service partner, bringing new retail operations and promised funding for visitor services to Del Rio and Val Verde County. WNP said it will operate the visitor center bookstore and provide direct financial aid, fund park-related research, and support community programs, outreach, and marketing to enhance visitor experience.
Marie Buck, president and CEO of Western National Parks, said, “We are proud to support the protection and interpretation of these storied and beautiful landscapes. Our partnership with Amistad National Recreation Area continues our important work, which aims to bring connection and wonder to the parks, creating lifelong stewards.” Christine Donald, the park’s chief of interpretation and resource management, said, “I am so excited to partner with Western National Parks at the park, and look forward to working with their professional and dedicated team who provide quality items to our visitors.”
WNP described the arrangement as including interpretive retail and both on-site and community-facing programming. In its announcement WNP stated the park store will be run from the Amistad visitor center, with net proceeds benefiting parks across the West. The National Park Service partner page for Amistad notes that WNP operates the bookstore as well and that “a portion of sales stay here at the park to help fund interpretive programs and materials.” The two descriptions use different language about how sales dollars will be distributed; the partnership materials do not provide a numerical breakdown.
Amistad National Recreation Area sits where the Rio Grande, Devils River, and Pecos River meet and is roughly three hours from San Antonio. The reservoir is the U.S. portion of International Amistad Reservoir, one of only two reservoirs jointly managed by the United States and Mexico. The park offers extensive water-based recreation including boating, swimming, and largemouth bass fishing, and is known for dramatic canyons, diverse desert environments, riverbank habitat that supports migrating monarch butterflies, public hunting access, and cultural resources. The area contains one of the world’s most extensive concentrations of Archaic-period pictographs and has been occupied since the last ice age; Spanish exploration, military activity, railroad development, and ranching are part of its layered history.
WNP highlighted its longstanding role in park support, noting, “Since 1938, WNP has provided more than $162 million in aid to parks,” and described itself as a nonprofit education and philanthropic partner of the National Park Service. Local visitors and community organizations in Val Verde County stand to gain expanded interpretive materials and outreach tied to that support, while the bookstore operation could affect visitor services and local fundraising for programs.
For more information or to reach park staff, Amistad National Recreation Area lists its mailing address as 10477 Highway 90 West, Del Rio, TX 78840 and phone (830) 775-7491. As the partnership unfolds, residents can expect more coordinated programming and retail offerings at the visitor center; WNP and park officials have signaled increased resources for interpretation and research, with further operational details to follow.
