xAI to Invest More Than $20 Billion in Southaven Data Center

Elon Musk’s AI company xAI announced a more than $20 billion investment to build and retrofit a major data center in Southaven, Mississippi, a project officials say is the largest private corporate investment in state history. The facility, named MACROHARDRR, is intended to expand xAI’s training compute to about 2GW and accelerate the company’s race to train ever larger generative models.

Mississippi officials announced that Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence company xAI will invest more than $20 billion to convert and expand a large warehouse in Southaven, DeSoto County, into a data center called MACROHARDRR. Governor Tate Reeves described the commitment as “record‑shattering” and said it “sets the pace for continued high‑tech investments” in Mississippi, framing the project as transformational for the region’s economy.

State and company materials describe MACROHARDRR as a retrofit of an existing roughly 800,000‑square‑foot warehouse along Stateline Road, adjacent to the Memphis metropolitan area and near xAI’s recently acquired Southaven power plant site. Officials said construction and retrofitting work will prepare the facility to begin operations in February 2026, with company representatives at the announcement outlining plans to expand training compute capacity in the greater Memphis footprint to about 2GW.

xAI portrays the expansion as a critical component of its Colossus supercomputer program. The company said MACROHARDRR will boost Colossus training compute to about 2GW and highlighted that it ended the year with “over one million H100 GPU equivalents” across its systems. In materials distributed by the governor’s office, xAI’s leadership said, “xAI is scaling at an immeasurable pace, we are building our third massive data center in the greater Memphis area. MACROHARDRR pushes our Colossus training compute to ~2GW – by far the most powerful AI system on Earth. This is insane execution speed by xAI and the state of Mississippi. We are grateful to Governor Reeves for his support of building xAI at warp speed.”

Officials project the project will create hundreds of permanent jobs and thousands of indirect or subcontracting positions during construction and operations, and generate tax revenue intended for public safety, education, health services, parks and infrastructure. The state said xAI will use Mississippi’s standard data center incentive package to support the investment.

The announcement did not include Elon Musk in person; local officials and company representatives attended the event. Mr. Musk publicly announced the purchase of the site on December 30, according to materials circulated by the governor’s office. Local leaders, including Southaven Mayor Darren Musselwhite, welcomed the investment and emphasized its anticipated fiscal benefits for municipal services.

The scale of the investment and the pace of buildout underscore a broader industry pattern of massive capital spending on compute infrastructure. Bloomberg reported that xAI spent $7.8 billion in cash in the first nine months of last year, a figure officials and analysts cite when discussing the capital intensity of training large generative models. xAI positions Grok, its flagship chatbot integrated into X, as one of the products supported by the firm’s expanding compute capacity as it competes with established model developers.

Questions remain for follow‑up reporting, including final confirmation of the warehouse square footage, detailed job projections, the specifics of any on‑site power generation or grid interconnection plans tied to the nearby power plant purchase, and the full terms of state incentives. State officials said documents and further details will be available through Mississippi economic development channels as the project advances.
