Zaleski State Forest and Lake Hope Offer Year-Round Recreation in Vinton County
Zaleski State Forest and Lake Hope provide year-round recreation and lodging close to home, with trails, cabins, boating, fishing and winter sports for Vinton County residents.

Lake Hope State Park, set inside the 26,824-acre Zaleski State Forest, gives Vinton County residents a full calendar of outdoor options from lakefront swimming to multi-day backpacking. The park spans 2,983 acres and surrounds a 120-acre lake with a 600-foot swimming beach, boathouse rentals and a single boat ramp on State Route 278 by the dam.
Visitors will find lodging and services for families and groups. Campflare lists 66 family cabins broken into 25 Standard cabins (sleep five), 21 Iron Furnace Legacy cabins with stone fireplaces (sleep four) and 20 Forest Legacy cabins (sleep four to eight), all with full kitchens, bathrooms, heat and air conditioning. Laurel Lodge accommodates up to 24 guests. A portion of the family campground remains open year-round, with Publiclands reporting nearly 150 non-electric sites and nearly 50 electric sites; Publiclands also lists current nightly fees of $21–$22 for non-electric and $25–$26 for electric sites (plus a $1 holiday rate). For reservations and up-to-date availability, call the park office at 740-596-4938.
Trails are a major draw. Zaleski contains a 29-mile backpacking trail with three official backcountry campsites equipped with latrines and cistern water; primitive backcountry campers must register at the trailhead. Mountain bikers can follow roughly 25 miles of trails, including the Copperhead Trail (7.2 miles), Wildcat Trail (3.5 miles) and the 2-mile Bobcat Trail. Cyclists and hikers also use the Moonville Rail Trail to reach the brick Moonville Tunnel and the wooden King’s Hollow Tunnel on a roughly 5.4-mile out-and-back route; ghost lore around Moonville Tunnel draws extra weekend traffic. For those on horseback, ODNR states that horses may be ridden only on forest roads or designated bridle trails, though published bridle-trail mileage varies by source.
Water recreation is organized for low-impact use: hand-powered and electric-motor boats are permitted on Lake Hope, and the boathouse offers canoes, kayaks, paddleboards, pedal boats and pontoon rentals in spring through fall; rentals and concessions may be reached at 740-596-4949. Beach water quality is monitored via BeachGuard from Memorial Day to Labor Day. In winter, sledding, cross-country skiing, ice skating and ice fishing are possible when conditions allow.

The landscape carries deep history. ODNR notes prehistoric Zaleski flint mining about 4,000 years ago and remnants of iron furnaces from the region’s industrial past; the Hope Iron Furnace sits near trailheads and anchors historical interpretation. Forest management uses prescribed fire, harvesting and other practices to sustain timber, wildlife habitat and recreation access.
Rules and safety matter for locals: Zaleski State Forest is open daily 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., with legal campers, hunters and anglers allowed during other hours, and a 30 mph speed limit on forest roads unless posted otherwise. Dam Assets Ohio explicitly states that hunting is prohibited inside Lake Hope State Park, while hunting and fishing are permitted on other ODNR-managed lands under Division of Wildlife rules; residents should confirm boundary rules and seasons with park staff.
For practical planning, Lake Hope State Park mailing address is 27331 State Route 278, McArthur, OH 45651; the Zaleski State Forest office can be reached at 877-247-8733. ODNR promotes the park as offering “a truly relaxing, yet rustic getaway from the high speed of modern life.” With year-round trails, cabins and lake access, Lake Hope and Zaleski remain a local alternative to busier regional sites and a resource Vinton County can use for recreation, gatherings and outdoor tourism; confirm trail mileage, cabin inventories and seasonal services with the park office before travel.
