Amerks Fall to Division-Leading Laval 4-3 in Eight-Round Shootout
Scott Ratzlaff made 30 saves on his 21st birthday eve, but Laurent Dauphin's round-eight shootout goal gave Laval a 4-3 win and weekend sweep over Rochester.

Three second-period power-play goals weren't enough for the Rochester Americans at Place Bell on Saturday afternoon, as Laurent Dauphin ended an eight-round shootout to give the North Division-leading Laval Rocket a 4-3 victory and complete a weekend sweep of the Amerks.
Riley Fiddler-Schultz, Konsta Helenius and Quebec native Olivier Nadeau all scored on the man-advantage in the second period to pull Rochester level at 3-3, a lead it couldn't protect through the final 14 minutes of regulation. Zac Jones led all Amerks skaters with two assists, while Jagger Joshua, Carson Meyer, Jack Rathbone and Anton Wahlberg each contributed one.
Neither team gave an inch in overtime. Both clubs generated a pair of scoring chances in the sudden-death period, but the netminders again stood tall and kept the contest even, forcing the extended shootout.
Rochester held its own through the early rounds of the breakaway challenge. Helenius converted on his attempt, only to have Laval's Belzile answer in the very next round. In the fourth round, Joshua Roy and Rathbone each successfully converted on their chances to keep the tension level. It took Dauphin's decisive attempt in round eight to finally separate the clubs, putting the finishing touches on the 4-3 result for Laval.

Rookie netminder Scott Ratzlaff, who turns 21 years old on Sunday, was outstanding despite the loss. He made 30 saves through regulation and overtime, then stopped five more in the shootout in his first AHL appearance since Feb. 15. Ratzlaff and Laval's Kähkönen combined to make 20 saves over the final 14 minutes of regulation alone to force overtime. Helenius and Rathbone were the only Amerks to convert in the shootout; Vsevolod Komarov, Nadeau, Jones, Wahlberg, Fiddler-Schultz and Meyer were all turned away.
The defeat adds another difficult chapter to Rochester's season series against Laval. The Amerks won the first two meetings but closed out the series with a 2-5-1-0 mark against the Rocket, mirroring the same result from the previous year. This back-and-forth contest was the second between the two clubs in less than 24 hours and the fourth meeting since Feb. 20. Laval entered the afternoon at 36-18-2-3, atop the North Division, and left having confirmed exactly why.
Rochester earned an extra standings point for reaching overtime, but it was cold comfort after watching Dauphin end things on home ice.
