Belleville Senators Sign Defenceman Sam Sedley to AHL PTO

The Belleville Senators added offensive depth to their blue line when they signed 22-year-old defenceman Sam Sedley to a Professional Try-Out on March 11, with the Allen Americans simultaneously announcing they had loaned their top-scoring blueliner to the AHL club.

Sedley arrived in Belleville carrying some of the most productive numbers among ECHL defencemen this season. In 56 games with Allen in 2025-26, the 6-foot-0, 190-pound blueliner posted 41 points on six goals and 35 assists, accompanied by a +15 rating and just 20 penalty minutes. His power-play production stands out particularly: he ranked third overall in the ECHL in power-play assists with 22 and fifth overall in power-play points with 23, according to the Allen Americans' release. He led all Allen defencemen in scoring and sat sixth on the team overall.

This is Sedley's second professional season. In his rookie campaign in 2024-25 with the Reading Royals, the Belleville release credited him with 62 regular-season games and 27 penalty minutes, though the release lists his point total as 30 while the accompanying breakdown reads seven goals and 35 assists, a figure that does not reconcile arithmetically. He also collected three points, one goal and two assists, in four playoff games for Reading, and made two regular-season appearances with the Lehigh Valley Phantoms at the AHL level.

Before turning pro, Sedley spent his entire junior career with the Owen Sound Attack in the OHL. The Belleville release states he played 236 games across five seasons, accumulating 168 points on 21 goals and 147 assists while serving as an alternate captain. Bayshore Broadcasting reported that the 168-point total represents the Owen Sound franchise record for points by a defenceman, citing his time with the club from 2019 to 2024 across four seasons, a discrepancy with Belleville's five-season figure that warrants verification.

Sources also conflict on Sedley's hometown. The Belleville release and Bayshore Broadcasting both identify him as a native of St. Mary's, Ontario, while the Allen Americans release lists him as coming from Stratford, Ontario.

Sedley joins a Belleville roster that already includes another Owen Sound Attack alumnus in Landen Hookey, a connection noted by Bayshore Broadcasting. The Allen Americans are the ECHL affiliate of the Ottawa Senators organization, which also operates Belleville as its AHL affiliate, making the loan a move within the same organizational pipeline as the regular season enters its final stretch.
