Bruins name Trent Whitfield Providence head coach, add Ryan Ward as assistant

The Boston Bruins named Trent Whitfield the 14th head coach in Providence Bruins history and added Ryan Ward as an assistant, a move that keeps one of the organization’s longest-serving development voices at the center of its AHL pipeline.

Whitfield, 49, spent the past 10 seasons, from 2016 to 2026, as an assistant coach in Providence. The Bruins said he helped the club win four Atlantic Division titles during that run, giving the affiliate a coach who knows both the locker room and the expectations that come with feeding players to Boston.

The promotion also closes the vacancy created when Ryan Mougenel moved out of the Providence head-coaching role. A July 14 Bruins staff announcement had left that position unfilled, and the organization had already been linked to Whitfield as the likely choice before the hiring became official.

Ward arrives from the Youngstown Phantoms, where he worked as a USHL coach, and gives Providence a second new voice on the bench. The pairing suggests Boston is not overhauling its AHL operation so much as reinforcing it with a familiar internal fit and a fresh outside addition, a setup that should shape how prospects are used, tested and moved toward the NHL roster.

Providence’s official website and team social channels confirmed the hire, and the AHL also announced Whitfield’s elevation and Ward’s addition. With Whitfield moving from assistant to head coach, the Bruins kept the job in-house and handed one of their key player-development posts to someone who has already spent a decade managing that pipeline from within.
