Conor Timmins broke his leg three months ago. His return to the Buffalo lineup cost Zach Metsa his roster spot on March 26, when the Sabres sent Rochester's captain back to the AHL just days after his last NHL appearance, a March 22 game against the Anaheim Ducks.

The move was less about Metsa's performance than roster arithmetic. With Timmins back and both Michael Kesselring and trade-deadline pickup Luke Schenn available as extra right-shot options, Buffalo had more defensemen than lineup spots on the right side. Metsa, 27, was scratched in Wednesday's overtime loss to Boston and officially reassigned to AHL Rochester the next day.

His numbers across 38 NHL games made the decision harder to justify: two goals, four assists, a plus-20 rating, 28 blocks, and a five-on-five differential of 23 goals for and just two against while he was on the ice.

Coach Lindy Ruff cited playing time, not performance, as the rationale. "He'll play 20-plus minutes, which will be great for him," Ruff said at KeyBank Center. "Short-term here with Timmins going back in, we feel Timmins can help our penalty killing." Ruff added that with no practices scheduled over the following three to four days, getting Metsa active in Rochester was the right call over sitting him idle on the bench.

Metsa's waiver-exempt status made the transaction straightforward. Rochester welcomed its captain into a demanding schedule: three games in three days against the Toronto Marlies at Blue Cross Arena. His AHL line of two goals and 15 points in 16 games gave the Amerks an immediate upgrade on a blue line navigating a critical stretch of the playoff chase.

The Sabres' message was clear: this reassignment is a parking spot, not a demotion.
