The Philadelphia Flyers recalled defensemen Oliver Bonk and Hunter McDonald and goaltender Carson Bjarnason for practice on Feb. 18 amid the NHL Olympic break, then reassigned all three to AHL Lehigh Valley on Feb. 19 so they could return for the Phantoms’ weekend slate against the Hershey Bears. Flyers practices were held in Voorhees while Travis Sanheim and Rasmus Ristolainen represented their countries at the Olympics, leaving coaching staff to tap prospects for a day of high-tempo reps ahead of the NHL club’s next game Feb. 25 in Washington.

Head coach John Reirden described the sessions as intentionally competitive and developmental, saying, “The guys, their spirits have been really high. Today’s practice was pretty spirited, with some competitions that we had. That, in conjunction with bringing in new players that are excited about getting an opportunity, I think is really great experience for everybody involved.” Practice consisted of five-on-five drills, smaller one-on-ones and special teams sets; drill losers were made to do pushups and there were “plenty of celebrations for goals and clears,” according to coverage of the Voorhees skate.

Oliver Bonk, 21 and the Flyers’ 22nd overall pick in 2023, logged his first-ever NHL recall before returning to Lehigh Valley. In 22 AHL games this season Bonk has totaled two goals and six points; one outlet listed him at a minus-5 rating while another showed a 2-4-6 offensive split. Bonk, who missed time after sustaining an upper-body injury at rookie camp and did not return to the lineup until December, said of the recall, “It’s cool. This is where you want to be all the time.” Prospect analysis from ProHockeyRumors framed Bonk as “Philly’s top-ranked defense prospect” and argued he “likely won’t be sticking around past the next week” while projecting a possible extended NHL look in 2026-27 or 2027-28.

Carson Bjarnason, a 20-year-old second-round pick in 2023 from Carberry, Manitoba, also enjoyed his first NHL recall. In his professional rookie campaign with Lehigh Valley he is 11-7-3 with a 3.08 goals-against average and an .889 save percentage across 22 games. Flyers-affiliate coverage noted the group “went out to dinner last night” and teammate Denver Barkey said, “It’s been great. When I found out that they were coming up, I was pretty pumped. Some younger guys, and familiar faces around. It’s been nice to have them here, we went out to dinner last night.”

Defenseman Hunter McDonald was recalled for the second time this season; he previously skated with the Flyers from Jan. 17–28 but has yet to appear in an NHL game. McDonald’s AHL line this season shows 40 games played, five assists, 65 penalty minutes and a plus-9 rating for Lehigh Valley. The Phantoms described the Voorhees skate as “an invaluable midseason experience” for McDonald and the other prospects before they rejoined the AHL club.

Organizationally, the short-term recalls served two purposes: keep NHL practice intensity up while Sanheim and Ristolainen were at the Olympics, and give Flyers decisionmakers a live look at young talent in NHL drills. The Phantoms expected the recalled players to “get into AHL game action over the weekend” against Hershey, giving each prospect immediate, measurable ice time to follow the NHL workout. For evaluators tracking depth and timelines, Bonk’s pedigree and Bjarnason’s professional minutes remain the clearest takeaways, while McDonald’s recurring call-ups indicate he remains on the club’s short-term radar.
