With a 5-2 victory over the Cleveland Monsters on Thursday at Rocket Arena, the Grand Rapids Griffins clinched their eighth overall division title in the franchise's 30-year history, and their first since 2014-15. More specifically, it was the Griffins' first Central Division crown since 2002-03.

With three weeks remaining in the American Hockey League's 90th regular season, the clinch marks the Griffins' second-earliest title in franchise history, behind only the 2002-03 Central title claimed on March 9. Grand Rapids has earned the Sam Pollock Trophy for the first time since 2005-06, when it was awarded to the champion of the North Division; the Pollock Trophy has been bestowed upon the Central Division's top team since 2015-16.

The game itself turned on a wild second period and a decisive third. The Monsters drew first blood 1:46 into the second period when Luca Pinelli buried one past goaltender Carter Gylander on an odd-man rush. While on a two-man advantage, Anttoni Honka Sandin-Pellikka fired toward the net, the puck bounced out to Sheldon Dries, who fed Carter Mazur on the doorstep for a power-play equalizer at 4:16. Cleveland reclaimed its one-goal lead with 89 seconds left in the period, but Mazur tied it again with one second to spare on a 4-on-1, tucking a loose puck in on the doorstep.

Grand Rapids claimed its first lead just two minutes into the third when Jakub Rychlovsky fed Janis Tralmaks, who jammed it in from the backdoor. Stachowiak extended the lead to two before Shai Buium rocketed a one-timer from the blue line to seal the 5-2 final. Gylander stopped 28 of 30 shots to earn the win.

The Griffins continued their historic run into the clinch with a 45-13-4-1 record and 95 points through 63 games. That margin has left the rest of the Central division gasping. Grand Rapids led the Central Division for the entire season and entered Thursday's game 21 points above second-place Chicago. The Griffins trail the Providence Bruins by four points in the race for the Macgregor Kilpatrick Trophy, awarded to the AHL's regular-season champions.

The offensive production fueling this run has come from multiple directions. John Leonard leads the club with 30 goals, 16 assists and 46 points in just 39 games, having reached last year's Calder Cup Finals with the Charlotte Checkers. Sheldon Dries has contributed 20 goals and 18 assists for 38 points in 49 games, while captain Dominik Shine has posted 21 goals and 16 assists for 37 points in 38 games. Rookie Michael Brandsegg-Nygard rounds out the top four with 16 goals and a team-high 21 assists for 37 points in 52 games.

Between the pipes, the tandem of Sebastian Cossa and Michal Postava has been among the AHL's best. Cossa, a former Detroit Red Wings first-round pick, carries a 24-7-4 record in 35 games with a career-high five shutouts, a 2.25 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage. Postava has been equally impressive in his 21 outings, going 13-6-0 with two shutouts, a 1.86 GAA and a .932 save percentage.

The season's milestones have stacked up relentlessly. The Griffins clinched their playoff berth on Feb. 27, the earliest such date in franchise history and the earliest for any AHL team since 1993, when the Binghamton Rangers clinched on Feb. 24. Earlier in the season, the club set an AHL record with a 17-game road points streak from Oct. 10 through Jan. 23, going 15-0-1-1 to eclipse the 2010-11 Milwaukee Admirals' previous mark of 16 consecutive road games with a point.

The Griffins, who secured their postseason berth on Feb. 27, will return to the Calder Cup Playoffs for the third straight season under head coach Dan Watson, who has never missed the postseason as a pro head coach and carries a 5-7 playoff record in his previous two seasons in Grand Rapids, including a trip to the 2024 division finals. Grand Rapids, which has won two Calder Cups (2017 and 2013), is 86-71 all time in the AHL postseason. Seeding and matchup details for the Griffins' 20th playoff appearance in 30 seasons will be determined as the regular season closes out on April 19.
