Habs Sign Prospect Luke Mittelstadt to ELC, AHL Deal with Laval Rocket
Luke Mittelstadt, younger brother of Bruins center Casey Mittelstadt, signed a two-year ELC with Montreal and joins Laval immediately on an AHL deal.

Luke Mittelstadt wrapped up four seasons at the University of Minnesota as team captain and is turning pro with the organization that drafted him, signing a two-year entry-level contract with the Montreal Canadiens covering the 2026-27 and 2027-28 seasons, with an AHL contract to join the Laval Rocket for the remainder of this season and playoffs.
The 23-year-old left-shot defenseman, selected 197th overall by Montreal in the seventh round of the 2023 NHL Draft, led all Gophers blueliners in goals, assists and points this season with two goals and 19 assists across 36 games. He closes his NCAA career with 80 points on 11 goals and 69 assists in 152 games. His ELC takes effect July 1, and he will hit restricted free agency after the 2027-28 campaign. The signing brings Montreal to 29 standard contracts on its books for next season.
Mittelstadt arrives at an opportune moment for Laval. The Rocket sit atop the AHL's North Division with a 36-18-2-3 record and 77 points through 59 games, but the club has been patching its defense since losing Adam Engström. At 5'11" and 185 pounds, Mittelstadt profiles as a defensively responsible option with enough offensive instinct to factor on a second power-play unit. Under the CBA, his age of 23 means his ELC runs two years rather than the three years a player 21 or younger would receive.
The younger brother of Boston Bruins center Casey Mittelstadt, Luke took a patient path to this point. He was passed over in back-to-back drafts before Montreal selected him immediately after his freshman season in Minneapolis. He played for Team USA at the 2023 IIHF World Junior Championship, recording three assists in seven games and winning a bronze medal, before returning to the Gophers for three more seasons and eventually taking on the captaincy.

His NHL prospects are modest: analysts have noted he does not appear in top-10 or top-15 prospect rankings for the organization, and his long-term ceiling is likely that of a depth call-up at the NHL level. But for Laval, the fit is practical and immediate. Pascal Vincent gains a seasoned college captain who improved his defensive game each season in the Big Ten, arriving just as the Rocket make their push toward the AHL playoffs.
Montreal's NHL club is also in a strong position, holding the third seed in the Atlantic Division at 36-18-10 with 82 points through 64 games. Mittelstadt will not be eligible to suit up for the Canadiens while on his current AHL contract, but the two-year ELC beginning in 2026-27 ensures the organization retains his rights as he develops at the AHL level.
