Isaac Howard’s goal mix highlights breakout AHL rookie season with Bakersfield
Isaac Howard turned a raw shot mix into 22 goals for Bakersfield, and his December surge showed why Edmonton may not need to wait long for him.

Isaac Howard’s rookie season in Bakersfield was built on more than finishing touch. The video package of his goals shows a winger who can find soft ice, release the puck quickly and beat structure in different ways, a useful sign for Edmonton as it weighs how soon he can fit into a middle-six role.
That matters because Howard did not arrive as an ordinary minor league addition. Edmonton acquired him from the Tampa Bay Lightning on July 8, 2025, in a deal for Sam O’Reilly, then signed him to a three-year entry-level contract beginning in 2025-26. The move came after Howard won the Hobey Baker Memorial Award at Michigan State, where he put up 52 points, including 26 goals and 26 assists, in 37 games. Edmonton already viewed him as a player who could push for NHL duty, and his first pro season gave that projection real shape.

The most encouraging part of Howard’s Bakersfield tape is the variety. Some of his goals came from arriving in the right pocket of space and getting the puck off his stick before defenders could close. Others came off different looks, including quick-release finishes that punished mistakes in coverage. That kind of scoring tends to translate because it is not dependent on one setup, one linemate or one type of puck movement. The flash is obvious, but the repeatable trait is the speed of his decision-making.
His best stretch came in December, when he was named AHL Player of the Month after posting eight goals and eight assists for 16 points in 11 games. He scored in three straight games, had four separate three-point outings, and recorded the first hat trick of his professional career. That month suggested Howard was not simply catching hot goaltending or riding a lucky bounce run. He was consistently getting to dangerous areas and finishing with enough pace to matter against AHL structure.
Howard closed the regular season with 22 goals and 25 assists for 47 points in 45 games for the Bakersfield Condors, then earned a place on the 2025-26 AHL All-Rookie Team. He and Quinn Hutson became the first teammates to both make the AHL All-Rookie Team at forward since Rochester’s JJ Peterka and Jack Quinn in 2021-22, a reminder that Bakersfield’s offense had real depth behind his breakout.
Howard also got 17 NHL games with Edmonton, scoring two goals and adding one assist, and on May 7, 2026, the Oilers said he would represent the United States at the 2026 IIHF World Championship in Switzerland. For Edmonton, the lesson from his rookie year is clear: the shot mix is real, the scoring habits look pro-ready, and the timeline to matter in the NHL is tightening fast.
