Mathieux Darche turned Bridgeport’s closing stretch into an evaluation lane, not a formality. With the AHL club down to three regular-season games before the playoffs, the Islanders moved Isaiah George, Victor Eklund, Cal Ritchie and Liam Foudy into Bridgeport to see who can handle real stakes before a pivotal offseason in Long Island.

That approach fits the way Darche has operated since taking over as general manager and executive vice president on May 23, 2025, after years in the Tampa Bay Lightning hockey operations department. He is using Bridgeport as an extension of the NHL depth chart, and with the standings tightening and playoff roles up for grabs, the organization is treating every remaining shift as part of a broader roster decision.

The most intriguing name in the group is Eklund, who was already making early Bridgeport appearances in mid-April after arriving from Sweden. The 19-year-old was given the option to sit out, but he wanted the ice time, a small detail that says a lot about how quickly he wants to push into the conversation. George and Ritchie give Bridgeport more young skill to sort through in the final week, while Foudy brings a more established pro presence as the lineup gets closer to the postseason.

That matters because the Islanders are not just trying to fill out a roster in Bridgeport, Connecticut. They are trying to answer a bigger question: which of these players can force his way into the NHL discussion fastest? Eklund has the most obvious momentum because of his age and arrival timing. George offers another look at a player the organization wants to accelerate. Ritchie’s assignment gives the club another center option to study under playoff pressure, and Foudy can help stabilize the group while also showing whether he belongs higher on the organizational ladder.

The pipeline picture got even clearer with Quinn Finley’s new deal. The Islanders announced on April 15 that the 21-year-old signed a two-year entry-level contract after a junior season at the University of Wisconsin in which he produced 33 points, 17 goals and 16 assists, in 37 games. He led Wisconsin in goals and finished second on the team in points, and he was selected by the Islanders in the third round of the 2022 NHL Draft, 78th overall. The contract begins with the 2026-27 season, so Finley strengthens the future more than the present, but he adds another notable name to a system that is being pushed hard right now. Even with Semyon Varlamov expected to handle starts before the playoffs, the bigger story is the same: the Islanders are pressing every lever they have to sort out who can help next.
