Jake O'Brien set for AHL debut in Firebirds' playoff series vs. Colorado
Seattle is sending eighth overall pick Jake O’Brien straight into a Calder Cup pressure cooker, with Coachella Valley asking for immediate help against Colorado.

Seattle is throwing Jake O’Brien into the hardest possible first impression. The Kraken’s 2025 first-round pick was set to make his AHL debut in the Coachella Valley Firebirds’ Pacific Division Finals series against the Colorado Eagles, a best-of-five matchup that carries real playoff leverage from the first puck drop.
The Firebirds opened the series Wednesday night at Acrisure Arena in Palm Desert, with the first two games in Coachella Valley before the bracket shifts to Loveland, Colorado if needed. Colorado earned home-ice advantage by finishing higher in the Pacific Division standings, which raises the stakes for a Firebirds team that already had to go through a five-game grind to reach this round. Coachella Valley advanced when J.R. Avon scored 1:47 into double overtime in Game 5 against Ontario on May 9, finishing off a 3-2 win and sending the Firebirds into the division final.
O’Brien arrives with more than prospect hype. Seattle selected the Toronto native eighth overall in the 2025 NHL Draft, then signed him to a three-year, $2.925 million entry-level contract on July 3, 2025. He is listed on the Firebirds’ 2026 Calder Cup Playoffs roster as No. 44, a 6-foot-2, 176-pound right-shot forward born June 16, 2007. For a team already deep into its postseason identity, the question is not whether O’Brien is part of the future. It is how quickly he can help in the present.
Kraken development consultant Zac Dalpe said O’Brien spent much of the season preparing for the pro game by working on faceoffs, puck movement, defensive coverage and playing with pace through the neutral zone. Those are the details that matter in May, when every shift can swing a series. Seattle also pointed to O’Brien’s standing among his peers, noting that he was one of five finalists for the Ontario Hockey League’s outstanding player award in April, a group that has included Connor McDavid, Mitch Marner and Wyatt Johnston among past winners.
Coachella Valley has become accustomed to pressure. The Firebirds are in the Calder Cup Playoffs for the fourth straight year, have already won eight playoff series in their brief franchise history, and reached the Calder Cup Finals in both 2023 and 2024. Now they are asking a first-round pick to step into that environment and help turn a tight Pacific Division battle in their favor.
