Jets Prospect Alfons Freij Makes AHL Debut with Manitoba Moose
Alfons Freij posted seven assists in seven games at the World Juniors before debuting for Manitoba in a loss to Tucson on March 21.

Alfons Freij's path to North American professional hockey wound through Swedish juniors, a second-tier loan stint, and a gold medal run at the World Juniors. It finally arrived at the AHL on March 21, when the 20-year-old defenseman stepped onto the ice for the Manitoba Moose against the Tucson Roadrunners. Manitoba lost the game, but the debut itself marked a significant milestone for one of the Winnipeg Jets' most closely watched prospects.
The Jets selected Freij 37th overall in the 2024 NHL Draft, making him an early second-round pick. His route to Manitoba was anything but direct. After spending his draft year with the Växjö Lakers' under-20 club in Sweden, Freij was not kept on Växjö's main roster and instead went on loan to second-tier pro club IF Björklöven. He did not reach the top level of Swedish hockey until signing a two-year contract with Timrå IK last summer. Because he was not a first-round pick, the NHL's transfer agreement with the SHL required that he be offered back to his Swedish team before being assigned to the AHL, and all parties agreed another season in Europe made sense for his development.
That season with Timrå produced 6 goals and 5 assists for 11 points in 42 games, with a minus-six rating. Modest numbers at the club level, but the calendar year contained a more compelling performance. At the 2026 IIHF World Junior Championship in January, Freij logged major minutes on Sweden's power play and posted seven assists in seven games, tying for the fifth-most points in the entire tournament. Sweden captured gold, its first World Junior title since 2012, with Freij playing a central role in that run.
Timrå's SHL season ended on March 14 when the club missed the playoffs, finishing 12th out of 14 teams. The Jets wasted little time, announcing Freij's reassignment to Manitoba on March 18. He joined the Moose with 16 regular-season games remaining as the team pushed for a playoff spot.
Daily Faceoff's Steven Ellis ranked Freij as the seventh prospect in Winnipeg's system last summer, but his World Junior performance and the fact that several prospects ranked ahead of him have struggled in the AHL this season suggest that number could move upward when new rankings are released. He also arrives as a more seasoned player than many prospects coming straight out of junior hockey, having already spent a full season competing at the SHL level.
Freij joins a significant Scandinavian contingent within the Jets organization. Elias Salomonsson, Isak Rosen, and Gustav Nyquist are all with Winnipeg, while Fabian Wagner, Samuel Fagemo, and David Gustafsson are in Manitoba. His 2026 World Junior teammate Sascha Boumediene, a Stockholm product, is currently at Boston University.
Manitoba's remaining regular-season schedule gives Freij a narrow window to build chemistry and establish himself before the Moose either clinch or miss a playoff berth. A strong finish could position him to compete for a roster spot with Winnipeg when training camp opens next fall.
