Brennan Othmann's two-game NHL cameo with the Calgary Flames ended the way many post-trade-deadline roster moves do: not because of what happened on the ice, but because of what was happening on the roster sheet. The Flames reassigned the 23-year-old winger back to the AHL's Calgary Wranglers despite Othmann producing a goal and an assist in those two appearances. Performance wasn't the issue. Post-deadline recall rules were.

Under the league's post-deadline framework, teams can carry only four players on regular AHL recalls at any given time. With other forwards already occupying those slots, Othmann had to come down. The move freed the fourth spot and immediately shifted attention to who climbs next.

The answer seems obvious: Rory Kerins.

The Wranglers forward just earned AHL Player of the Week honors for the week of March 30 to April 5, after ripping three goals and four assists across two games. That's not a hot streak in the traditional sense; it's the continuation of one. Kerins has 50 points in 52 games this season, including 13 points in his last six outings since returning from injury. He has 21 goals and 32 assists, and his four-point performance in Calgary's 5-2 win over Laval was the best single game of his professional career. William Stromgren, another Wranglers forward who contributed a goal in that same win, is also in the conversation for the open slot.

Othmann arrived in Calgary on March 6, acquired from the New York Rangers in exchange for Jacob Battaglia. He posted five assists in 10 Wranglers games before his March 28 recall, then made an immediate impression at the NHL level. The Flames, who are managing a stretch-run roster while evaluating young forwards, didn't send him down as a judgment; they sent him down as a necessity.

For Kerins, the timing could not be better. His seven-point week and his position atop the Wranglers' scoring ranks make the case for a recall almost impossible to argue against. The slot is there. So is the production.
