Michal Postava did more than blank Manitoba. He changed the series.

After the Moose had spent Game 1 dictating the script with a 1-0 win and a late Mason Shaw winner, Postava answered on Sunday at Canada Life Centre with 30 saves for his first Calder Cup Playoff shutout, and the Grand Rapids Griffins left Winnipeg with a 2-0 victory that evened the Central Division semifinal at 1-1.

That is the swing the Griffins needed. Manitoba had opened the best-of-five by surviving a goaltending duel, with Domenic DiVincentiis turning away 39 shots and Shaw scoring with 2:26 left in regulation. One night later, Grand Rapids stopped chasing the game and started controlling it, and Postava was the reason the Moose never found a way through. DiVincentiis was sharp again with 32 saves, but he was outdueled by a goalie who looked calmer with every Manitoba push.

Michael Brandsegg-Nygård gave Grand Rapids the lead at 17:04 of the first period on the power play, a goal that forced the Moose to attack from behind for the first time in the series. That mattered. Grand Rapids came into the postseason after a 100-point regular season and had one of the AHL’s top offenses, but the real separator in Game 2 was the crease at the other end. Postava, who was credited with 22 saves in Game 1, turned from solid to decisive when the pressure rose.

William Wallinder’s insurance goal finished the job and underlined how quickly the Griffins shifted the tone after dropping the opener. The regular-season numbers suggested this matchup should tilt Grand Rapids’ way, and they still do: the Griffins went 6-1-1-0 against Manitoba in the regular season, including 3-1-0-0 at Canada Life Centre. But the more revealing stat may be this one: Manitoba has scored only one goal in two games against Postava and Grand Rapids has already taken control of the goalie battle.

For a Moose team back in the Central semifinals for the first time since 2023 after beating Milwaukee 2-1 in the first round, the problem now is finishing. Grand Rapids has the split, the momentum and a goalie who just posted the kind of playoff shutout that can change a series fast.
