Rangers add Quick, Brassard to player development staff

The Rangers added Jonathan Quick and Derick Brassard to their player development staff, a move aimed squarely at the next wave of prospects pushing toward Hartford and, eventually, Madison Square Garden. Quick was named director of goaltending development, while Brassard returned as a player development assistant, and both will work under Tanner Glass.

That makes the hires more than a sentimental reunion with two former Rangers. Quick brings the perspective of a longtime NHL goaltender who spent his career managing the daily details of the position, and his job now is to shape the organization’s goalie prospects as they move into pro hockey. Brassard, a former Rangers center, will be part of the day-to-day development side that helps young players adapt to the grind, pace and habits required to survive the jump from junior or college hockey into the AHL and, later, the NHL.

The personnel move fits a pattern the Rangers have been building for years. The club’s hockey-operations changes on June 24, 2021, included Jean-Ian Filiatrault and Matt Hunwick joining player development, an early sign that the organization wanted more manpower dedicated to teaching players how to become pros. Quick and Brassard now widen that group and deepen the line between the AHL pipeline and the NHL roster.

The timing also lines up with the scale of the prospect pool. The Rangers’ 2025 development camp roster listed 32 players, a reminder that the staff is not dealing with a handful of names but a large, rotating group of young talent that needs structure, repetition and specific instruction. The names most likely to feel the first effects are the ones already central to the pipeline conversation, including Gabe Perreault, Carey Terrance and Dylan Roobroeck, all of whom have already been part of the organization’s development camp discussions with Jed Ortmeyer.

Colin Stephenson confirmed the hires and said Quick and Brassard will report to Tanner Glass. The structure gives the Rangers another layer of instruction between drafting a prospect and expecting him to produce in Hartford or New York, and it shows the organization is investing in the habits behind the roster, not just the roster itself.
