Special teams propel Ontario Reign to 5-3 sweep in Tucson
Andre Lee scored twice and Jared Wright added a shorthanded goal and an empty-netter as Ontario’s special teams powered a 5-3 win, completing a two-game sweep in Tucson.

Ontario’s special teams seized control in the second period and the Reign closed out a 5-3 win over the Tucson Roadrunners, sweeping the two-game set and preserving first-place positioning for Ontario in the division with 66 points. Three special-teams goals in the middle frame - including two power-play strikes and a short-handed tally - produced the separation in Tucson’s building.
The game began with Ontario opening the scoring in the first period; available reports do not identify the first-period Ontario goal scorer. Tucson’s Scott Perunovich evened it at 6:03 of the second with a low wrist shot from the right circle, his fourth goal of the season, knotting the game 1-1.
Ontario answered with a flurry on the power play. At roughly 8:45 of the second, Andre Lee converted 13 seconds into a man advantage after Aatu Jämsen fed Samuel Bolduc to Lee below the circle; Lee beat Tucson goaltender Matthew Villalta short side for his 20th and 21st tallies of the year and a three-point night. Ontario struck again at 13:17 when Martin Chromiak blasted a one-timer from the left circle, assisted by Glenn Gawdin and Nikita Alexandrov, to make it 3-1 and give Chromiak his 17th goal and a helper.
Tucson captain Austin Poganski responded on the power play at 15:13, burying a rebound from the low slot to pull the Roadrunners within one and register his 14th goal of the season. Late in the second, Jared Wright provided a crucial short-handed goal to restore a two-goal margin, sending Ontario into the third with a 4-2 lead; Wright’s multi-goal performance marked his first career multi-goal game.
The third period tightened when Kevin Rooney cut the deficit to 4-3 with a short-handed marker from the high slot with 3:19 remaining, forcing Tucson to pull Villalta for an extra attacker. Wright sealed the game with an empty-net goal with 66 seconds left, making the final 5-3.

Erik Portillo earned the victory for Ontario, credited with 25 saves on 28 shots. Reports list Matthew Villalta with 20 saves on 24 shots, while the box shows team shots on goal at TUC 28 - ONT 25; that discrepancy in Villalta’s shots faced and saves is noted for verification. Power-play efficiency finished at Ontario 2-for-5 and Tucson 1-for-3, and both clubs scored a short-handed goal.
Ontario improved to 34-16-1-1 with the sweep; Tucson fell to 22-19-8-0. Tucson’s rookie contributors included Daniil But and Dmitri Simashev, each credited with assists, while Owen Allard led Tucson with two assists. Forward Miko Matikka reflected on the road swing, saying, "We've been on the road for a little bit now, and I feel like as a team we bonded a lot on the road and focused ... I feel like coming back here, it's gonna feel great for the place, practicing at home."
Attendance figures are reported at 3,792 at the Tucson Convention Center for the Feb. 22 finale; the prior-night Feb. 21 game in Tucson listed 5,092 fans. Venue naming varies across accounts between "Tucson Arena" and Tucson Convention Center/TCC. The Reign will next host Bakersfield at 3 p.m. PST as Ontario looks to carry its special-teams traction into the upcoming home slate, while Tucson returns home with its playoff positioning, six points clear of eighth but seven back of fourth, still very much on the line.
