Riley Tufte needed just 4 minutes and 19 seconds to turn a one-goal lead into a runaway. His two third-period strikes, the 26th and 27th goals of his season, were the decisive blows as the Providence Bruins defeated the Utica Comets 5-2 on Saturday night at Amica Mutual Pavilion.

Providence looked sharp from the opening drop. Just 30 seconds in, Joey Abate rushed the puck down the right side on a 2-on-1 and slid a pass across to Jake Schmaltz at the left post, where Schmaltz tapped it over the line for a 1-0 lead. Riley Duran picked up the secondary assist. That edge held until Jonathan Gruden chipped in a rebound from above the crease to tie the game 1-1 with 8:19 left in the second period, and the teams skated into the third knotted.

The third period was all Providence. Georgii Merkulov broke the tie just 52 seconds in, receiving a feed from Matthew Poitras in the left circle and flicking it past the diving goaltender to make it 2-1. Less than eight minutes later, Max Wanner fired a shot from the point that Duran redirected from the slot to push the lead to 3-1 with 11:48 remaining. It was Duran's second multi-point game of the season.

Then came Tufte. With 7:27 left, he picked up a puck that had bounced off the back boards, found himself at the left post, and tucked it across the line for 4-1, assisted by Victor Soderstrom and Ty Gallagher. Mike Hardman answered for Utica just 67 seconds later, converting a one-timer from the bottom of the left circle to make it 4-2 with 6:20 to play. Tufte slammed the door. With 3:08 remaining, he hammered a slap shot off a rebound in the slot that zipped inside the right post for 5-2, with Matej Blumel and Billy Sweezey drawing the assists.

Tufte's pair of goals pushed him to the top of Providence's scoring charts, and the team-leading totals came in the moments the Bruins needed them most. Simon Zajicek was solid throughout, stopping 18 shots to collect the win.

Providence next faces the Springfield Thunderbirds on Wednesday, March 25, while Utica hosts the Laval Rocket the same night.
