Tverberg's Overtime Goal Sends Marlies to 2026 Calder Cup Playoffs
Ryan Tverberg's overtime goal secured Toronto's 4-3 win over Utica, punching the Marlies' ticket to the 2026 Calder Cup Playoffs with 11 days left in the regular season.

Ryan Tverberg scored in overtime at Coca-Cola Coliseum on Tuesday to lift the Toronto Marlies past the Utica Comets 4-3, clinching the club's berth in the 2026 Calder Cup Playoffs with more than a week remaining in the regular season.
Toronto jumped ahead early. Matthew Barbolini opened the scoring just 1:15 into the first period, and Landon Sim added a second first-period goal to give the Marlies a 2-0 lead through twenty minutes. Utica clawed back in the second on goals from Nathan Légaré and Angus Crookshank, and Crookshank completed a brace to put the Comets in front 3-2 heading into the third. The deficit didn't last: Toronto tied the game late in regulation to force extra time, where Tverberg provided the finish that made the clinch official.
Dennis Hildeby held the crease for Toronto, turning aside 13 of 16 shots while the Marlies' skaters worked to protect the lead and then chase the equalizer. Nico Daws was strong in the other net, stopping 19 of 23 shots for Utica in a losing effort.

The clinch arrives with eleven days still to play before the regular season closes on April 19. That window carries real weight. Toronto now controls its own postseason positioning in the North Division, with final seeding, potential home-ice in the first round, and first-round matchups all still to be determined. The remaining games also function as a roster laboratory: which prospects are earning bigger minutes, which line combinations are clicking, and how the Marlies manage their NHL affiliate's call-up and send-down activity will all factor into how sharp the team looks when the Calder Cup Playoffs open.
For a franchise that has made consistent AHL relevance part of its identity, the clinch is expected rather than surprising. What matters now is where they land in the bracket.
