DJI Avata 360 Day-One Firmware Adds FPV Controller Support, Stabilization Upgrades

The DJI Avata 360's first firmware release, v01.00.0100, landed not as a routine bug fix but as a feature package aimed squarely at fast-flying pilots who need precise control and stable HD links at speed. The headline addition is support for the DJI FPV Remote Controller 3, which swaps motion-based flying for dual-stick precision input. That matters on a course: the FPV RC3 gives pilots the tight directional authority that motion controllers were never designed to deliver in a race environment. The update ships alongside companion firmware for the DJI RC 2, DJI Goggles 3, and the latest DJI Fly app.

The number that matters most for competitive context is 18 meters per second. The update raised the Avata 360's maximum horizontal flight speed in Sport mode to 18 m/s, a threshold that meaningfully changes how the aircraft handles gate sequences and straightaway sections compared to its stock configuration. Alongside that, head tracking in 360-degree mode received a two-part improvement: reduced response latency and added roll angle control. For pilots flying the platform in immersive demo formats or mixed-format events where goggles-on orientation matters, both changes reduce the disorientation that previously made high-speed FPV viewing in full spherical mode feel sluggish.

On the capture side, Panorama Stitching Calibration is now a menu-accessible option rather than something pilots had to manage through post-processing workarounds. The update also adds 2.7K video at 60, 50, 48, 30, 25, and 24 frames per second in Single Lens mode, giving pilots a resolution tier that trades spherical coverage for sharper, lower-overhead footage during fast passes. Pilots running 8K/30 panoramic footage in Free View mode through the Goggles 3 should see a tangible drop in viewing latency, which was one of the more persistent complaints in early community testing. FocusTrack gained automatic subject detection for cycling and skiing, and the tilt angle display in Spotlight Free mode now dynamically tracks flight direction instead of holding a fixed reference.

The pre-race concern that deserves the most attention is not a feature addition. Updating the Avata 360 firmware can reset Return-to-Home altitude and maximum flight distance to factory defaults. A pilot who updates the night before a meet and does not re-verify those parameters is flying with RTH behavior that could trigger a failsafe return at the wrong altitude or abort the aircraft before it crosses the finish line. That is a DNF that has nothing to do with pilot skill.

The right update sequence is aircraft firmware first, then peripherals in the order DJI documents, followed by a full reboot of all hardware before powering the system back on for verification. Before touching the updater at all, write down every customized flight parameter: RTH altitude, max distance, and any control sensitivity settings dialed in for the course. Re-enter them manually after the update completes and confirm them in the DJI Fly app before arming for a first test flight.

For pilots weighing whether to update before a meet this weekend, the performance gains are real but not so dramatic that they demand an immediate pre-event install. If the current firmware is stable and the course is configured, hold the update until after the event. DJI's official release notes include rollback instructions for pilots who update and encounter unexpected behavior, and those should be downloaded and saved locally before any update is initiated.
