Hwacheon launches Bungeo Island drone festa with racing competition

Hwacheon County will put Bungeo Island on the drone-racing map when the first Hwacheon Bungeo Island Drone Festa opens August 15 and runs through August 16 at the Bungeo Island Ground Golf Course. The two-day program is built around three competition categories: drone VR, drone racing and aerial photography, with racing giving the event its most direct sporting stakes.

The prize structure gives the meet real weight. The Asia Business Daily reported a total purse of 15 million won, with awards paid out in local gift certificates and agricultural products. That is not exhibition money; it is enough to turn the racing bracket into a serious target for pilots who want more than a weekend demo run.

For drone racing, the important detail is that this is being framed as Hwacheon’s first drone festival in 2026 and as a national stage for drone enthusiasts’ imagination. That matters because first-edition events often end up as the proving ground for later calendar fixtures. If the racing holds up, Hwacheon will have a case for becoming a regular stop rather than a one-off showcase.

The venue also gives the festival a different kind of value.
