2026 FCS-FBS payouts revealed, McNeese tops list at LSU with $750,000

The biggest checks in FCS football are not side notes anymore, they are budget lines, and McNeese’s trip to LSU in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, sits at the top of the 2026 market at $750,000. That is the largest listed guarantee in the current payout tracker, with Florida A&M at Miami set for $740,000 and both Northern Iowa at Iowa and Weber State at Colorado listed at $700,000.

Those numbers matter because the FCS is leaning hard into these matchups. HERO Sports says there are 127 FCS vs. FBS games scheduled for 2026, up from 126 in 2025 and 121 in 2024, keeping the subdivision in a record-or-near-record volume of money games. The payout list is still being updated, and some figures are not yet available, but the early board already shows how often FCS programs are taking on multiple FBS opponents in the same season.

This is where the stakes get real. A seven-figure department does not treat a $700,000 or $750,000 guarantee as pocket change. For a lot of FCS programs, that cash can help cover travel, soften operating costs, ease scholarship pressure and free up money elsewhere in the department. In earlier coverage, Abilene Christian deputy athletic director Paul Weir called football game guarantees “significant inputs” into the entire athletic department budget, and that is exactly the right way to frame these games. They do not just fund football. They help support everything else attached to it.

The NCAA’s current Division I rules for non-FBS institutions show why. To stay in compliance, schools outside the Football Bowl Subdivision must meet financial-aid requirements that include either at least 50% of the maximum allowable grants in 14 sports or a minimum aggregate expenditure of $2,005,288.46 in 2026-27, a figure that is adjusted annually for inflation. When that is the floor, a single guarantee game can influence how a department builds the rest of its year.

The upside is obvious, and so is the risk. McNeese, Florida A&M, Northern Iowa and Weber State are all taking on higher-profile FBS opponents for sizable checks, betting that the money is worth the punishment. For some FCS programs, that is not scheduling fluff. It is how the season gets financed.
